Grades get often looked at, but feedback does not. @dgooblar.bsky.social (Univ. of Iowa) joins our podcast to talk "wise feedback": pair high expectations with specific guidance. Without the guidance, high standards alone can trigger stereotype threat instead of growth. 🎧 www.perusall.com/podcast

Also, as I've said before, the faculty at large community colleges could totally do the jobs that faculty at Yale do, and a lot of faculty at ivies could not do our jobs for a single semester.

I just finished @dgooblar.bsky.social's book, One Classroom at a Time, and it's so good I could *cry*. If you're an educator, stop everything else and start reading. Consider sending your provost a copy as a holiday gift. It's just incredible. ✨🥳🥰💜 #HigherEd

I'm spending time this week with Sheridan Blau's The Literature Workshop and came across "the Goldilocks Assignment."
Sheridan Blau on an assignment called the "Goldilocks Assignment." "It requires that students read through their poetry anthology at home and select three poems to write about in their reading logs and identify for discussion in class: one poem that they judge to be too hard, one that they think too easy, and one that is for them just right."

Once any space becomes less than 40% male, (straight) men tend to cede it entirely while shouting about how it “went woke”. Fascinating read:

Why aren't we talking about the real reason male college enrollment is dropping?
We would rather talk about literally everything else.

Effective immediately, access to the Morningside campus has been limited to students residing in residential buildings on campus (Carman, Furnald, John Jay, Hartley, Wallach, East Campus and Wien) and employees who provide essential services to campus buildings, labs and residential student life (for example, Dining, Public Safety, and building maintenance staff) Read more.

A New Perspective on
1968Columbia is a far different place today than it was in the spring of 1968 when protesters took over University buildings amid discontent about the Vietnam War, racism and the University's proposed expansion into Morningside Park. After a weeklong standoff, New York City Police stormed the campus and arrested more than 700 people. The fallout dogged Columbia for years. It took decades for the University to recover from those turbulent times. Columbia now has one of the most socio-economically diverse student bodies among its peer institutions. It has added a new campus designed to be open to the community and pursues fields of inquiry unheard of a half-century ago. Columbia is commemorating the 50th anniversary of those long-ago events with a deep dive of scholarship and exhibits chronicling what happened then and its effects today.

The first two excerpts are from a February 2023 NYT column. The second two are from a NYT column published yesterday. The same columnist -- Pamela Paul -- wrote both. 14 months apart. Just a mind-blowing lack of self-awareness.

I have to prep for class, so I don't have time to give this (predictably awful) NYTMag piece the dressing down it deserves, but: anyone who thinks about mandated diversity statements for more than five seconds can see through the fallacy that they have anything to do with "ideological conformity."
Screenshot of the headline of Stephen L. Carter's piece in the NYT Magazine: "College is All About Curiosity. And That Requires Free Speech: True learning can only happen on campuses where academic freedom is paramount—within and outside the classroom."Screenshot of this passage from Stephen L. Carter's piece: "Nowadays, I worry that we’re repeating the same mischief, with mandated (or strongly encouraged) “diversity statements” and the like. I’m often told that because I obviously agree with the goals the statements promote, I shouldn’t make a big deal out of them. But this objection misses the point. The “what’s the big deal?” approach puts me in mind of the philosopher Sidney Hook, who in a 1953 essay in The Times argued that an academic who refused to swear to not being a member of the Communist Party was like a chef who refused to say whether he was the one who poisoned the food. Not for a moment did Hook entertain the notion that the hypothetical professor might simply believe, as a matter of principle, that it is wrong to screen the professorate for ideological conformity.

It was wrong then; it is wrong now."
