Because you can count them (...towards a target) seems to be a major reason. And can 'engage the public' in planting them or sending you funding to plant them.

'Progressive' can (should?) surely be read as meaning 'proceeding in steps; continuing steadily by increments'. He comes across as a bit thick.

I joined 26/04/2025 and could download bonus episodes from the website up until sometime before 25/6/26, which is when I sent my first email to the address I gave you. (Reason I use the website is that I've accidentally chosen podbean for podcatcher)

No no, it's not that way round (unless things have changed again in last week or two). I have emailed but in the end they broke off the exchange. (....and weren't really listening) I'll try it again now and report back...

Noted the heartfelt plea for subscribers. Cancelled mine cos can't stream/download bonus eps from website anymore, and response was basically shrugging. I need to change my usual pod provider to get them now apparently. If it ain't broke... But don't come a-begging when I then cancel!

You've clearly never been there! And you've clearly never seen the handiwork of jays when there's an oak anywhere close.

Why are they planting trees when it's surrounded by them? Why privilege planting over (surely much more beneficial?) natural regeneration? Would that have been less of a story? Meant less trendy 'engagement' with volunteers? Or what? Doesn't NRW want natural regen?

The new Secretary of State said that he wasn't "entirely convinced that Wales needs new powers". Compelling evidence for devolution of policing and justice has been piled up by independent commissions since 2014. I do hope the PM will follow through on his 2022 call for "maximum devolution" to Wales

You like the annoying clickbait headlines which don't say where the article is talking about, but it's taking it to another level not to say in the main text where the garden centre in question is located (unless you think 'Powys' somehow covers it)

Yes - I don't remember exceptional heat per se, but the river through our town drying up for weeks (in my memory's version at least). Not come close to doing that since.

Dept seem quite aware but somehow frozen in the headlights. Not the whole answer, but e.g. different rate for commonage and land where certain ACRES CP scorecards are used would be somewhere to start.

Seems self-evident that a single minimum activity criterion for livestock farms, particularly one expressed as a stocking rate, just can't do what it's meant to on both an Italian ryegrass ley and a blanket bog. Why is it so difficult to have it differentiated by land cover type?

I was in Copenhagen at New Year once and was struck by the rather merry Danes who, while firing rockets at pedestrians and cars, nevertheless stopped at the red man even when the street was empty of traffic.

It's about 70p over 3 years for each adult in England. Is that the scale of the need? In Ireland, the recent advisory committee report reckons the ANNUAL cost of nature restoration is of the order of €450-700 million, which is €112-187 per Irish adult per annum. What do they know that we don't?

Depressing to hear, podcast after podcast, the Walescast lot (needless to say) telling each other as a truism that whoever 'wins' has the 'legitimacy' to be the Government and that anything else is likely to raise big questions. Just reporting 'what people are saying'?? They're saying it anyway...

The questions about how you access the news were very old school. Never listen to the tv or radio news or look at Wales Online, BUT subscribe to Nation, listen to Gwleidydda, Wales Politics Pod, Senedd Sources, For Wales See Wales, bits of S. Supp? They only asked about the first half..

Gwyn Jones @dgljones.bsky.social · 01/03/2026
Yes. But... there's a huge temptation to find in 'great little stories' a fig leaf which distracts from (and potentially substitutes politically for) the sheer scale of action and funding needed if targets are to be achieved.

My worry is on the more 'farmingy' needs of esp. 4010 & 4030 - c.350,000ha not in good condition. More of their needs will be ongoing as opposed to one-off, but the scale is huge compared to the current ACRES CP. More than 1 approach possible, but needs to be serious & at the scale of the problem
100
Gwyn Jones @dgljones.bsky.social · 05/02/2026
Looking at that positively, it's enough to need an infrastructure (and a corporate culture) of its own - half a dozen more staff in NPWS surely won't be enough. All quite doable though.
100
Gwyn Jones @dgljones.bsky.social · 05/02/2026
Looking at Scotland's Peatland Action, which is not necessarily the same, but a good starting point for thinking, 20,000ha p.a. restoration is estimated to need c.750 staff to deliver (most of them contractors doing the job on the ground of course). But still a good quarter of those are admin etc.

Gwyn Jones @dgljones.bsky.social · 05/02/2026
I have a feeling Govt would see its being outwith the CAP IT system as a strength rather than a weakness. But there would need to be interoperability to ensure no double funding (and at least of those payments would be State Aids needing to conform to certain rules).
010
Gwyn Jones @dgljones.bsky.social · 05/02/2026
But who would fund those additional tasks or, if DAFM is resistant to CP teams having additional roles, how would seamless actions on the ground, coherent signals to farmers etc etc be delivered? Who is thinking about these issues?
100
Gwyn Jones @dgljones.bsky.social · 05/02/2026
However, I share your scepticism that NPWS as a body has the experience and mentality necessary to deliver in real complementarity to the CAP. And it seems obvious also that, however imperfect at present, bodies such as the ACRES CP teams and ASSAP, are essential as an interface.

Gwyn Jones @dgljones.bsky.social · 05/02/2026
I agree with those saying that denying the CAP's (present as well as future) role is just a lie, and politically unhelpful in the long term. Having said that, I struggle with seeing how the scale of CAP payments is up to the task, and whether making everything subject to CAP admin rules is helpful
