“As a goodwill gesture, Rogers is waiving Moss’s late payment fees and service charges associated with two fraudulently activated lines. Still, Moss owes Rogers thousands of dollars for two devices.” Goodwill? The purchase of the 2nd device on same line should immediately be flagged by the provider.

This is just absurd - just heard from a friend who also fell for this. It is clear the cellphone company seems to be largely benefiting from selling phones to their own costumers via scammers. Who buys 3-4 phones within weeks from the same company and how does that not trigger any warning?

Syabrubesi, Nepal, a settlement with 835 people. On Aug 25 the nearest health facility was 24 min away. After the glacial lake outburst tore the valley, travel is ~9 hours, through roads that climb around the destruction. The 2nd-nearest option: 17h. We mapped what the flood did to health access. 🧵

Making the notion of `computational intractability’ accessible is more important now than ever, because promises that AI systems can scale are false and misleading. This is not difficult to understand if one thinks soundly and from 1st principles. Paper: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
Box 1. Intractability and exponential growth

Input-output mappings can differ in the amount of resources (e.g., time, space) needed to compute them. For instance, finding a number (output) in a list of length (input) takes on the order of steps because one needs only to inspect each position in the list at most once to find the number one is looking for. Sorting a list of numbers instead takes no more than steps because one needs to go through the list at most times to find the next smallest number. Mappings like these that are computable in , , etc., steps are said to be tractable. In contrast, some input-output mappings are intractable. For instance, when for each small increase in the number of steps doubles, then the growth is exponential (i.e., ). Such exponential growth may appear deceivingly slow at first but grows astronomically large quickly. People tend to be poor in intuiting intractable resource demands, leading them to underestimate resource demands needed for scaling up to larger . The water-lilies problem is a simple example: If a water lily doubles every 24 hours, after 60 days the lilies will already cover more than the surface of the earth (van Rooij, 2018). For implications of intractability, see the main text and Figure 1.
