The Metaculus Cup is a quarterly competition for predicting future events, like “Who will win the Nobel Peace Prize?” or “Will the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool be repaired?” (It’s not betting, no real money is involved) For the first time, the top two spots this year went to AIs

The point is, for my little cycling game, I can get nearly EVERY BUILDING IN A CITY All the skyscrapers but most of the houses, shops, industrial buildings, bridges - EVERYTHING I started off by using mapping data, but this is a far richer source

Thing I learned working on my virtual biking game: The USGS does aerial LIDAR scans to get the topography of all major cities in the US. Makes sense. What I didn't understand is this LIDAR data is incredibly rich: it isn't just a top-down view but is oblique enough to reconstruct entire downtowns

Wonder who invented this bizarre conspiracy theory…
At the start of the 119th Congress in 2025, Schmitt hired Nate Hochman as a staffer. Hochman had previously worked for the Ron DeSantis 2024 presidential campaign but was fired after producing a promotional video for DeSantis that feautured fascist imagery, including a sonnenrad, a symbol used by neo-Nazis and white supremacists. [109][110|[1111[1121
[1131 In September 2025, Hochman promoted a speech on social media that Schmitt delivered at the National Conservatism Conference, titled "What is an American?" [114] In the speech Schmitt criticized legal immigration, and said that America was not a
"universal proposition" open to anyone.

Do not, I repeat do not, make up fake things for conservatives to get mad at
The story actually starts in 2017. I thought it'd be funny to advertise that there was a "flag burning" protest at the Gettysburg cemetery.
I thought that people would laugh and move on with their days. Like when people were creating fake Facebook events about Limp Bizkit performing at the local gas station.
Instead, some conservative bloggers found the event, took it seriously, and mobilized about 50-100 losers to "counter protest" the fake event.
One genius shot himself in the leg. 2/7My friends and I laughed at the second amendment idiot who forgot how to use his gun and moved on with our lives.
Then COVID happened. My job was shut down and I was getting really bored driving Uber and DoorDash. I thought it'd be funny to my fiends if I
"ran back" the Gettysburg prank, made it more outlandish, and we'd laugh over it drinking whiskey on Skype.
That is not what happened.
Maybe I'm really good at tricking rubes. Maybe they're just really dumb. Here were the flyers.
3/7By the time the Washington Post had reached out to me (via fake identity), I was already pretty committed to the joke. Right-wing militias were starting to mobilize and I thought it was funny that they'd waste their holiday on some nonsense.
I expected maybe 50 people. A few news articles.
Over 500 people showed up to Gettysburg that day.
They harassed waitstaff and normal visitors to the park. That's the part I truly regret (and why I won't do it again).
They brought guns and cute vests.

Lmao the Wall Street Journal’s spin is that Trump’s $5000 promise is ACTUALLY a sarcastic way to mock Democrats who try to buy votes

The lab's decision to downplay the risks of the 2011 incident was not an isolated one, Bowen added. An official with URS — one of the private contractors running PF-4 under a government contract - told Bowen "all the time that we don't even need a criticality safety program," Bowen recalled.
The URS official, Charles Anderson, who was appointed in July 2011 to oversee nuclear high-hazard safety, "basically said he didn't need us and he could make more money" by replacing all the members of the criticality safety team with URS employees.

Just in case you ever have impostor syndrome, remember that in 2011, workers at Los Alamos National Laboratory brought six kilograms of plutonium together to take a picture to show their management. The amount was enough to start a chain nuclear reaction if they had been slightly closer.

Continuing this little experiment, I made a bike themed version This took all of 20 minutes with Claude, which is terrifying It obviously isn’t GREAT graphics, but it’s a lot better than I expected with essentially zero effort
Bike inexplicably blowing a trail of dust, there is no rider. The screen says 26 km/h, 25:54c 6% grade, and has a map of hills. The graphics include a windmill, buildings, a desert with cactuses, and gras with bushes. It is raining(the word RAIN is in the corner)

This shouldn’t be a problem, she can sell to all the Republican bookstores … oh wait
My debut romance novel comes out October 13th and I asked if my local bookstore would be willing to stock it (since the book literally takes place in our town) and this was their response.
It would be one thing if they thought the book wouldn't sell well in their store or just wasn't a compelling story, but to be told that my book won't be stocked because I work in Republican politics and I'm a republican author is so disheartening.
We're very intentional about what we bring onto our shelves, the partnerships we commit to, and the authors and stories we choose to actively support through this space. After spending some time learning more about you, your work, and your broader platform, I don't think this one is the right fit for us, so we're going to pass on carrying Open Seat.
