YIMBY Action leads are voting on a recommendation for Prop 45 today. If you or any of your friends are on the fence, I highly recommend reading this great thread. Tl;dr: AB130 already exempted infill housing from CEQA. Prop 45 would just open the floodgates for sprawl.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting that fully funded IZ is problematic, fwiw. That’s just not how this works in most locales.

I think an argument could be made that social housing is a form of inclusionary zoning. But I do take your point. I think it’s fair to say that Barbara was not considering the funding mechanism and focused solely on the stated intention of the policy

Dan Federman @dfed.me · 29/09/2026
Oh, I’m not pretending that unfunded is a rare case. My point is solely that the intention of the policy and the details of the policy as implemented are incongruous

Dan Federman @dfed.me · 29/09/2026
Not that I’m aware of. I think it would be a good policy in the abstract. But I do not have any proof.

Inclusionary zoning is exclusionary only when it is a mandate without municipal funds to back it up.

Dan Federman @dfed.me · 29/09/2026
The issue isn’t inclusionary zoning. The issue is *unfunded* inclusionary zoning! Making newcomers pay for the sins of the current and past residents is incredibly backwards and ineffective no matter how you slice it.

Hauled some stuff on the bike. Birthday party supplies got to the park faster than they would have in a car.

Absolutely scorching endorsement, bringing serious heat for Weiner and against Chan, but a blast furnace at Pelosi for her role in this race and her true reasons for it. Never read an editorial this heated in Chron www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/edit...

Endorsement: Who should replace Nancy Pelosi in Congress? It’s not even a choice
OPINION: The most intriguing thing about the race between Scott Wiener and Connie Chan to fill Nancy Pelosi’s House seat is that it has become a race at all, the editorial board writes.

Yes! Though imo what makes it scarier is imagining what these models could do if they were being prompted by a bad actor.

My Nest Protect smoke detector died. And now I am learning that it is normal for a smoke detector to flash bright green every 60 seconds? Who on earth thought a flashing light in a product mandated in bedrooms was a good idea???

The Castro came to be because it was an affordable refuge for folk who had no other places to turn. Landmarking buildings – and therefore making building housing harder – in the most expensive city in the country turns our back on that history.

SF is saying a *Walgreens building* must be preserved because something quite notable happened inside the building many decades ago. Put up a plaque! Preserving our built environment is a silly way to honor the past.

Oh he never was that direct online or in his advocacy. We’d been arguing on Twitter (this was ~2018 or so) for a while so I figured we should just chat. I was floored by how simple his motivation was.

I once got coffee with a NIMBY who was fighting state laws that would allow more density Guy lived in Marin. Commuted to the Peninsula for his job He admitted point blank that his activism was based on fear that increased population density would make his commute longer. That was the whole of it

Does the circuit breaker have financial penalties? Or is it just loss of zoning control? Put another way: should I be rooting for Mandleman to succeed so that we “suffer” the consequences of this action?

I can walk to four kick ass grocery stores within 7 minutes. I live two blocks from a brewery that makes my favorite beer. A 3 minute walk to my favorite park. My commute is a 10min bike ride. I never worry about parking or complain about traffic. My life is unambiguously better than yours.

Will that win over skeptical folk? Probably not. Will it help folk who might otherwise raise an objection to a project think twice about the consequences before doing so? I sincerely hope so.

“I support this thing but” is an incredibly common concept. It sounds reasonable on the surface! It’s deeply important to make it clear that supporting transit and housing conditionally is effectively the same as supporting neither.

Don’t get me wrong. I use Waymo and find it a better product than Uber and Lyft. I don’t get whipsawed from rapid acceleration, and the vehicle stops at stop signs. But anyone claiming these vehicles will reduce congestion doesn’t understand basic physics.

I absolutely believe that you think you support both density and bike lanes. What I’m trying to explain is that your words, actions, and your theoretical support are at odds with one another. Folk aren’t putting words in your mouth: they’re drawing a straight line from your actions to results
110
Dan Federman @dfed.me · 07/09/2026
Most housing and street projects don’t change in the face of opposition. They just fail and never get built. Advocating for “the building should be less profitable” or “move the transit project elsewhere” is in the majority case just as destructive as saying “this should not happen”
120
Dan Federman @dfed.me · 07/09/2026
You support projects (housing, bike lanes, etc) in theory but not in practice. And then you get mad at folk who point out that supporting things in theory does not make the world a better place. This kind of reasoning is what has made our streets unsafe and our housing expensive.
120
Dan Federman @dfed.me · 07/09/2026
“I support this thing only if it changes” is not supporting the thing. Supporting housing but only if fewer people get to live there is not supporting housing. Making our transit less efficient by reducing the number of potential customers actively harms transit.

Items prices by markets do not suffer from an induced supply problem. Prices counter demand. That’s the point.
