In some ways, walking through D.C. today was distressing. The Claw hovers in front of the White House. The Ellipse is a huge barren pitching mound. Barricades block the way between the Washington Monument and the Reflecting Pool, which is turning black. But Union Station is still beautiful.

While in Mobile, Sarah and I visited the Africatown Museum and took a trip to the resting place of the Clotilda, the last slave ship to enter the U.S. I asked the captain to turn wide on the way in so we also saw the S.S. United States, being prepped for sinking as an artificial reef off Florida.

The remains of the Clotilda, the last slave ship acknowledged to have arrived in the U.S., are thought to lie under the surface here north of Mobile Bay.
