Yeah, inside reporting held that there were four hard no votes on Gaetz: Collins, Murkowski, McConnell, & Curtis, & several others who were leaning no. Also, GOP Senators would’ve wanted to make an example of at least one Trump nominee to show their independence.

I agree on the latter paraphrase. Roberts & Barrett especially & Gorsuch & Kavanaugh to a lesser extent do care about logical coherence. Roberts as chief justice & a conservative visionary & Barrett as an academic want their rulings to withstand long multi-sided intellectual scrutiny.

Ah, hadn't noticed that shift on Roberts' part but it may well be happening. What I have noticed is somewhat increasing checking of Trump by Roberts+Barrett between the tariffs, birthright citizenship, & the Post Office, all this year. But that trend is ofc very reversible.

Thanks for the thread! My one caveat is that this is true in modern industrial & postindustrial societies. I don’t think it was generally true in preindustrial agricultural societies.

Thanks for replying! If Jeffries & Kushner discussed Middle Eastern legislation, taking the meeting would be appropriate. But Jeffries hasn’t indicated that they did. I’d have no problem if Jeffries had met w, say, Susie Wiles, Dan Scavino, or James Blair.

Yeah, that sounds like a double standard. My objection to meeting w Kushner is that he’s a Trump family member w no WH, government, or even party job right now. Jeffries shouldn’t validate Trump using family for state business. But Mamdani doesn’t have to fête Trump even if he has to deal with him.
