- similar to soccer one above, but a simulator inspired by Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Minimal gameplay, and you largely just watch as battles play out and a military campaign shapes a world. People form connections and interpersonal relationships, defect, rise ranks, die, etc.

Today we went to a public park that had an enclosed off-leash dog park inside of it. Turns out a LOT of dog owners assume that because there's a dog park nearby that for some reason means your dog is allowed to be off-leash and run freely through the entire public park. I am once again angry.

This election there's just an astounding amount of generally unremarkable candidates who are 'well-presented' but whose plans are broadly "make things good" and talk about issues with zero specificity, which I directly attribute to AI use. Generally a rule of thumb is if the candidate is a woman there's like a 95% chance of her policies and politics being thoughtfully positioned, grounded and actionable. If the candidate is a man I'd say that number drops down to somewhere around the 20% range. I'm sure that doesn't mean anything.

And I'd be remiss not to say: this is in no small part why I think "shipped games" are largely a bunk metric that I think should be held incredibly lightly by everyone. It's rarely reflective of an individual's personal output or work ethic and has almost everything to do with how the dice roll.

At my current studio the saving grace is that our plan and resources are determined by resources we *actually have*, so the game *will* ship in some form, a publisher determines if we get extra time. It's backed by us being honest, production-aware and lots of advocating for cutting scope. It rules.

Once you're running a studio most of it is luck. Like, you're often doomed by the industry you've willingly signed into. That's why you need to *start* with a plan that guarantees *something* will finish. That's what's actually is to your team's benefit - everyone wants to finish something.

I think the assumption, especially among management, is that a "good" game will pitch/market/sell better, which brings in more profit, be more sustainable, and is a net win. This also overlooks how good games don't always sell, how shit the market is, and that *none of it matters if nothing ships*.

The goal of a studio should be to *finish* games, not *make* games. IMO if you're not constantly moving towards the goal of actually *delivering* a thing then you're doing it wrong. A rough, finished game people can show will always feel better than a "good" game that never reached eyeballs.

partner and I talked yesterday about how because of management/luck neither of us have shipped a game at a studio for 5 years. Got me thinking about how productions fail by assuming making a "good game" is the goal, when the goal should usually be to *finish the game* independent of how "good" it is

Weirdest cold email I've received to date today; guy emails me with a prototyping asking for a quote on work for something. Sure, okay, normal, but the weird part was he did so by forwarding an email chain of him talking to a different dev who also gave him a quote for the same work! Don't do that!
