Violet Oil Beetles, found on Higher Comfort nature reserve. They like species-rich grassland and woodland edges, which are exactly the habitats we're developing on the nature reserve. They parasitise solitary bees, so are an indicator of a healthy wild bee population.

Delays in house building, due to land banking and delays by developers are a much bigger issue, but bats and birds don't lobby as effectively as house-builders do.

DEFRA pulled the Sustainable Farming Incentive last night, with no notice. This will be a great loss for landowners trying to improve habitats, financial devastation for some environmental consultants and a great loss for biodiversity. Dyson and Clarkson don't care. There will be no protests.

I'm advocating culling deer as part of good woodland management practice, as do Natural England, The Wildlife Trusts and the Forestry Commission. It is a lack of culling that has allowed the massive increase in deer numbers.
