UC is hitting its enrollment targets. But permanent faculty hiring lags
Faculty say the University of California’s reputation for academic excellence and its contribution to new ideas and innovations is at stake.

Recs for readings / sources on the merits of in-class writing? Great if gen-AI is part of the discussion but I’m esp interested in approaches that frame in-class writing less in terms of what it prevents and more in terms of what it makes possible / permits / affords on its own terms.

i’m always nervous on the first day of classes but it helps to find mail like this at my office
porscha fermanis’s new book “settler fiction from the southern hemisphere “book series description

RACE IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY LITERATURES AND CULTURES
Race in Nineteenth-Century Literatures and Cultures (RNCLC) brings together critical work on the material and intellectual histories of race across the long nineteenth century. The series considers such issues as enslavement, abolition, race science, colonial expansion, and indigeneity in relation to cultural production and consumption across the globe. Focused on underexplored nineteenth-century archives, RNCLC nevertheless pays particular attention to the relevance of the period's racial formations to the contemporary moment. Titles included proceed from the conviction that understanding this key moment in the history of race enables us to imagine revolutionary alternatives to the structures inherited from the nineteenth century.
Series Editors
Manu Samriti Chander, Georgetown University
Patricia A. Matthew, Montclair State University

Depending on yr approach…Phillis Wheatley (Peters) — this is how I’ve come to read her, with help from Saidiya Hartman, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, and Liz Miller. Preface to Poems, “To Maecenas,” “On Imagination,” and Royal American Magazine exchange would be my picks!!!

No idea whether it wd be useful, but happy to send it to you—& looking forward to hearing more abt yr project. I love contemporary engagements w Wheatley (Age of Phillis of course, + Tiana Clark’s poems, among so many others). Do you know Mary Deverell’s poem? A late c18 example of this phenomenon!

Essential reading. Many things to say, one of which is that @theatlantic.com and @chronicle.com might consider doing some very basic fact-checking in future before gleefully and self-servingly packaging unsubstantiated, bad, and in fact harmful takes by TAH as searing truth-telling.
