hubby is studying for a uscg captain's license. one of the exam sections requires recognizing what you see at night, based on boat lights. what kind of vessel it is, what condition it is in, and what side of the vehicle you're looking at based on red, white and green dots in the dark. total madness!
three red dots stacked together, one white dot to the right of them, one right dot on the left, and one red dot right below, against a black background

"you're right" lol lies. in these moments, i too wanna be reductive and call it a bullshit machine, giving me exactly what i wanna hear without learning anything.
Me: It is also generally very strange to me that you feel the need to preface it with "Not if the goal were to produce a significant result and report it as a confirmatory finding." What does it matter what the goal is if you were always going to do this to some end? You have no control over how people use what you give them. So this moral directive seems misplaced unless you follow through.

Claude: [Weighing whether the refusal argument actually holds up.]

You're right that intent was the wrong axis. I can't verify anyone's goal and can't govern what happens downstream, so a refusal conditioned on purpose is mostly a gesture. Worse, the transparent demonstration I offered would surface the same "winning" specification, which anyone could lift out and report on its own.

The only line I can actually hold is on the artifact I produce. A multiverse analysis or a simulation of error-rate inflation hands back the whole search, with the selected result embedded in the distribution it came from. What I wouldn't produce is the selected result stripped of that context and written up as if it were the planned test, because that object is misleading on its face regardless of who uses it or why. Past that point you're correct that I have no leverage, any more than a methods textbook explaining optional stopping does.

So the honest version of my answer would have been shorter. I'll run analyses that keep the search visible, I won't write up a cherry-picked result as confirmatory, and I don't pretend that second commitment prevents misuse of the first.

this is claude opus 5.5 medium. what an odd way to define p-hacking with respect to what happens when you have p-hacked rather than what the act of p-hacking involves. and again confuses it with cherry picking and nontransparent reporting. you can very much be perfectly transparent about p-hacking.
Me: Can you define p-hacking?

Claude: [Defining p-hacking in precise, concise terms.]

P-hacking is the practice of making data collection or analysis decisions contingent on the observed results, so that a reported p-value falls below a significance threshold (typically .05). Common forms include optional stopping, selectively dropping outliers or conditions, trying multiple covariate sets or outcome measures, and reporting only the specifications that reach significance.

The statistical problem is that a p-value's error-rate interpretation assumes a procedure fixed in advance. When choices depend on the data, the actual sampling distribution of the test statistic differs from the nominal one, so the reported p-value overstates the evidence and the realized Type I error rate can far exceed α. Simmons, Nelson, and Simonsohn (2011) showed this under the label "researcher degrees of freedom," and the term "p-hacking" itself was popularized by Simonsohn, Nelson, and Simmons (2014) in their p-curve work.

Gelman and Loken's "garden of forking paths" extends the point, since inflation can occur even without deliberate search. A researcher who runs only one analysis, but would have chosen a different one had the data looked different, faces the same problem of an undefined reference distribution.

We addressed one of the most unfair, unexpected, and somewhat odd critiques we heard on this paper (not abt its substance) that replication crisis was never about replication rates and that it's "nonsense" & "historically inaccurate" to suggest it. Goes in a footnote bec not essential to the paper.
Accounts of the events that catalyzed the crisis narrative vary, and some prominent fraud cases and methodological critiques predate the large-scale replication projects. Our claim does not depend on this chronology. Isolated replication failures, however prominent, do not license the label ``crisis''. Science has always contained failed replications and fraud cases do not specifically license a ``replication'' crisis per se. The label ``replication crisis'' asserts that failures are systematic rather than idiosyncratic, and a claim of systematic failure is a claim about the replicability rate of a literature, whether or not a rate has been computed. Large-scale replicability studies (e.g., Collaboration, 2015) formalized this claim (see also Fidler and Wilcox, 2026) even if they may not have created it. It is this claim, in its informal and formal versions alike, that our analysis shows cannot be established from binary verdict data.

three cords (yes, it is a unit of measurement, a bewilderingly vague one at that). it's a ridiculous amount!! they just dump it and leave so we gotta move all of it if we wanna use the garage or the driveway. and then there's the splitting, definitely by hubby. i don't trust myself with an axe.
A large heap of freshly cut firewood rounds and split logs dumped on a gray tarp beside a green house with a brown garage door. Tall ponderosa pines and a brushy green hillside surround the clearing, with pine needles covering the bare ground in the foreground under an overcast sky.View from a covered porch looking out at the same unstacked firewood pile spread across a tarp on the ground, with pale cut ends catching the gray daylight. It is hilarious to end a review in this tone and with this many insults with "Cordially". What a bully!
Ok, now that we have the standardized effect sizes (thank you), we can see that these are near zero and, indeed, unreliable
effects. This is where I tried to save me and the authors time by noting I'd heard all these counterarguments about SESOIs
before. Unfortunately, the authors try to raise them again, but they are nonsense. I mean come on...surely you can just
eyeball those standardized regression coefficients and see they are nearly zero? How much closer can we possibly get to
zero before we can just, as human beings with common sense (and perhaps a heavy heart as our bias is typically in the
direction of that beloved p < .05), say "these are nothing."This is why I advised you not to go searching for defensive
papers...I'm aware they exist and they all produce self-gratifying rubbish arguments. I mean, really, .03, .07,.12 as small,
medium and large effects? Sorry if a bit of pique is coming through (and I mean no venom toward the authors who have
merely been seduced by silly arguments), but this is clear foxes guarding the henhouse rationale.

watched lupin the iiird immortal bloodline and as usual it was great fun and totally weird and such fantastic art. the ending credits alone were mesmerizing. likewise the artwork on the movie poster is terrific. all so cool.
Japanese movie poster for Lupin the IIIrd: The Movie, rendered in stark black-and-white sketchy ink linework with pale gray-green fill. A large figure, Lupin, in a suit crouches in the upper portion, one hand raised, seen through a jagged web of thorny black branches that frame the whole image. Smaller figures of Goemon, a samurai with a sword, Fujiko, a woman with long hair holding a gun, and another man holding his hat, Jigen, appear running across the lower half. Red vertical Japanese text runs down the right edge, the large red English title sits at bottom left above a white Japanese subtitle, and credits plus a release date appear in the lower right corner.

Thanks, Harry Collins, for bringing some sense to the conversation. It's not a silver bullet because, guess what, there are no silver bullets.
Harry Collins, a sociologist at Cardiff University who has studied tacit knowledge for over 50 years, said he was optimistic about the effort because it was focused on molecular biology — a field that has matured to the point that many of its fundamental mysteries have been worked out.

But he was skeptical that Transfyr’s approach would reveal much in fields where scientists agree on far less, even about which experiments will reveal something important.

“You might be lucky now and again, but it’s not a silver bullet for scientific problems,” Dr. Collins said.

Berna Devezer @devezer.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
OK I have to point this out: So he does know how experiments work because last I remember, he (and colleagues) tried to sell the story that reforms work using a design that did not have a corresponding treatment or control about the reforms, and insisted that there was strong evidence of causation.
Dr. Nosek said that Transfyr would have to present detailed results to prove that this system really does make science better. “Take 50 labs, track half the experiments with this stuff and don’t track the other half — then look for differences in progress,” he suggested.

Four harbor seals, three adults and a pup, hauled out on the end of a wooden marina dock, their mottled gray and brown bodies sprawled in various poses — three looking back toward the camera with big dark eyes. Moored powerboats and an inflatable dinghy fill the background, reflected in the calm water. The same four harbor seals, as viewed from our boat, doze on a low dock float at sunset, lined up nose to tail with one pale seal peering at the camera mid-roll.
