This post is on my Web site. I've finally started posting on Substack too, as part of the Post On Site, Syndicate Everywhere strategy suggested by Cory Doctorow. This one is on supposed "bottlenecks" in software development. The only real bottleneck is responsibility. substack.com/profile/1030...

Language is the bottleneck. We need to be able to understand each other and ourselves if we want good things, or if we want other people to provide good things for us. Sometimes we need to express ou...

Does my Speak-n-Spell feel pain when I type O-U-C-H? The jury is out. Philosophers and neuroscientists say that's fucking stupid, but I called a guy from the Center for Pretending that Household Electronics Are Sentient and he said there's no way to know for sure.

Again, Dear BlueSky People: this is social media. As much as I might agree with you’re saying, your whimsical pseudonym is not helping me to see you as a real person with a real name. In this moment, it’s socially important for real people to identify themselves, bravely, as real people.

I like the culture on BlueSky, except this: I don’t like anonymity and pseudonyms. I like real names. I like to know who’s talking. I like the fearlessness of people putting their names on what they write I know there are other perspectives on this point. I’m only letting y’all be clear about mine.

All right: it's time for some good ol'-fashing testing talk, like in the days of yore on Xitter. The testing business is still fixated on test cases. It doesn't have to be that way. developsense.com/blog/2019/01...

When I was young, some people questioned whether it was worthwhile to send humans to the Moon. Now that I’m older, I can say there are some people who should definitely be encouraged to keep trying to go to Mars.

This speaks to the essence of why we test. We live in dangerous times. To understand and address the danger, we can't dismiss — or undermine — questioning and learning.

Forgive the earnest post here, but one year ago this week, Global Tetrahedron took over The Onion. We've since brought back the paper and ONN, dramatically increased revenue, and hired more writers and artists. But most importantly, as other places debased themselves, we refused to bend the knee.

The arbitrary, capricious cruelty of this administration, and of ICE, beggars belief. I'm a US citizen and a Canadian citizen too. I won't be going back to the US for the foreseeable future because—even as a citizen—I cannot trust that my rights will be upheld. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

I observe that as of today, the Washington Post has removed “Democracy Dies in Darkness” from its splash screen and masthead/title bar on its iOS portal. Another sign, I guess, that democracy is dying in darkness.

Pro tip for the Democrats: start referring to tariffs as "import taxes" because a) that's what they are, and b) supporting import *taxes* doesn't look at all good on a Republican.

Using the expression "think outside the box" is a canonical example of inside-the-box thinking. On a related note, could we change the game where ever damned thing is a "game changer"?
