I had some great workshops with students over the last several weeks. If you couldn’t join us for those, you did join but want reminders, or you're just curious, here's a summary of the most commonly recurring discussions about doing history: ghanaonthego.com/2026/07/31/d...

Dr. Seulgie Lim's interdisciplinary research on gender and politics in Senegal inspires her to explore similar political questions about other parts of the world. We want to know: What does your African social science research inspire you to explore in your off hours?

Exactly. I argue that because technocratic fields erased their founding and repackaged themselves as professional fields based in “science” we continue to reproduce inequalities repeatedly, and at least sometimes that’s unintentional but the inevitable result of colonial derived models and theories

Yes much of the planning that happened in the UK was informed by experiments and sentiments developed in the colonies - or rather the inspiration went back and forth. I talk about it as bourgeois sensation - rarely based on actual science and more on what made rich people uncomfortable.

An abattoir or a corn mill = unacceptable bc it offended their sensibilities and it wasn’t something they cared about. And losing their minds over horn honking by African drivers, which dared to pierce the boundaries of residential space. It’s all coded and highly colonial.

Jennifer Hart @detroittoaccra.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
Yes! Every time I hear about this I think about stories from my own work where colonial officials used regulations to decide what was and was not acceptable noise. The ice factory in the middle of an Accra neighborhood = acceptable bc they wanted convenient ice. …

I taught methods classes for ~25 years and always advocated for methodological "promiscuity." My students knew that I commonly used the words "kaleidoscopic" and "capacious" a lot, too. Tonight, my friend Kameelah shared this Clarice Lispector passage; she gets it :)
So writing is the method of using the word as bait: the word fishing for whatever is not word. When this non-word—between the lines— takes the bait, something has been written. Once whatever is between the lines is caught, the word can be tossed away in relief. But that's where the analogy ends: the non-word, taking the bait, incorporates it. So what saves you is writing absentmindedly.

Is this word to you promiscuous? I would like it not to be, I am not promiscuous. But I am kaleidoscopic: I'm fascinated by my sparkling mutations that I here kaleidoscopically record.

Jennifer Hart @detroittoaccra.bsky.social · 31/01/2026
Idk - I def never waited if there was ice coming or if it was going to be significant amount of snow. It only gets more labor intensive to shovel if you wait. Some folks just prefer to do it all at once but I have a bad back and two bad shoulders so it’s not happening at all at some point 🤷🏻‍♀️

Haha people were closing businesses this morning and saying the roads were treacherous but I drove out to a farm to get sourdough from a micro bakery just fine. Also: shovel and salt early and often; do not wait until the ice has formed multiple layers lol
