Vicky Osterweil's *Extended Universe: How Disney Killed the Movies and Took Over the World* makes the kind of polemical, startling, illuminating argument that defines great criticism; it's the sort of book that encapsulates the reasons I read criticism: www.haymarketbooks.org/books/2525-t... 1/

I believe that stateless socialism, as a new movement, will supersede all variations in this period to come, and perhaps end much of what we know as Leftist sectarianism and nation-state socialism.

"We don’t need society or government" You are conflating two totally different things. Society precedes government and can exist without it. Government needs society in order to exist at all. We are society. Read #MutualAid en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutual_...

You are attempting to hold a whole organisation, as well as a greater number of concerned citizens, responsible for the actions of a single individual. Let's be clear: you're talking about a biased media reporting on the activities of one guy with a hammer. And you're even exaggerating that. 2/2

The state does not provide any of these things. It merely appropriates them. These public goods are provided by ordinary working people.

Well, according to you it does. See your previous post. I think the state should get out of people's lives, stop defending capitalist property, and let people enjoy what is rightfully theirs, i.e. a decent home, a decent livelihood and the product of their labour

But that's only one example of the British state being less than democratic. Thousands of people are made jobless and homeless. People are beaten and raped by police officers or bamboozled by bureaucrats and corporate capitalists. The nation state is not a nice institution.

BTW, your representation of the PA ban is over-simplified. People are regularly arrested for merely expressing support for the organisation. Many are doing so because they regard the ban as an unwarranted attack on free speech. If the only issue is Brize Norton then what's that all about? 2/3

I think my point that the UK is anything but a collection of like minded people has been amply demonstrated. In addition, many people in the UK are indeed pro-Russian and/or pro-Israeli. Many people here are also opposed to the British military and to the British state's policy on Palestine. 1/3

J. Alfred Rooke @determinedinquiry.bsky.social · 02/04/2026
As a citizen of the UK, I can tell you that it is certainly not a collection of like minded people. The British state is engaged in a systematic project of oppression against its own people. See, for example the ongoing campaign against Palestine Action.

It's certainly not "a collection of like-minded ppl deciding how they want their society to operate". Following Max Weber (more or less) I would say it's an organisation claiming a monopoly on the use of violence over a given territory.

So would I, but I'd also argue that the intent is manifest in the work. The little of Rowlings that I've read shows clearly that she is concerned over issues of exclusion and elitism. That does not mean that she is not capable of prejudice herself.

Of course the work was sincerely meant - try writing a novel that isn't. Unfortunately, human beings are a mass of contradictions - that's just one reason why putting artists on a pedestal is a bad idea.

I agree that people should not support her, but I still don't see that the value of her work has changed. Bigotry is bigotry, whether accidental or not. If we judged art by the morals of the artist, there would be very little worthwhile art.

How does the relationship change? Of course, if I don't listen to Simon or read Rowling, my relationship to their work is fundamentally altered, but the work itself isn't changed. Didn't mean to offend you. What do you see as the implication of 'pretend'?

Agree or disagree, we need to be discussing Universal Basic Income. It is too important of a subject just to scroll past.
"With Universal Basic Income, one could well
imagine people who didn't have to work to
survive still choosing to become dental
assistants, or toymakers, or movie ushers, or
tugboat operators, or even sewage treatment
plant inspectors. It's even easier to imagine
them choosing to become some combination
of several of these.
.
It's extremely difficult to imagine someone living
without financial constraints choosing to spend
any significant amount of their time highlighting
forms for a Medical Care Cost Management
company, let alone in an office where
underlings were not allowed to speak."

As far as Rowing goes, don't put money in her pocket, but don't pretend it changes the value of her work. I didn't listen to Paul Simon's Graceland album until the ANC called off the boycott of South Africa. It's a great album. It always was. Simon is till a shit. 2/2

Though in fact viewing Guernica while Picasso was alive, helped support the struggle against fascism in Spain. Working people used to leave their boots in front of the painting to be shipped to the International Brigades on the front line. So, a complicated case. 1/2
