YouTubers who make edits of Bad Apple are the only ones taking the question "What would it be like to see in four dimensions?" seriously.

I believe I drew part or all of another arc, but never finished coloring/polishing. And I also had the arc after that at least partly thumbnailed. I don't have access to them right now as I'm out of town, but next week when I'm home I'll post what I have. Thanks for reading Floaty!

When other people anthropomorphize dumb stuff like animals, pencils, buildings and airplanes they're poor, deluded curiosities. But when -I- anthropomorphize expensive computer programs I'm the world's smartest boy and anybody who disagrees with me is ignoring reality.

I may not like what Frieren does with the antisemitic tropes it borrows, but at least I have enough respect for it to see that it has the capacity to say something to its viewers.

Art is in conversation with other art and with our world, even when it's fantasy. You may feel you've insulated Frieren from criticism, but you've only turned it to so much ash in your hands.

Comparing populations you want to exterminate to beasts, saying they lack human emotions, claiming they're manipulative and plotting the downfall of your people, these are all classic tropes in genocidal propaganda. Frieren makes these tropes the unquestioned law of its world and is worse for it.

He was kind of right about that too, unfortunately. I much prefer your definition, but if you don't recognize McCloud's definition comics people will look at you weird.

020

desktopmetaphor.bsky.social @desktopmetaphor.bsky.social · 23/05/2026

I like the rhetorical gesture McCloud makes when he says "Here's to the great debate!" It seems very magnanimous, but he's saying it in the void of possibility that his definition has just created, signaling that all future debates about comics will take place on his turf.

fun thread! I think the best definition of comics is "comics are things we consider comics." genres (and mediums) are cultural constructs, not formal truths. they are what people decide they are.
