Once again reflecting on how much our national discourse is constituted by hyper-vigilant attempts to be generous & nuanced about the history of British imperialism and British papers are just like, "lol, subhumans"

"obviously a challenging situation today" this gobshite is so out of his depth jfc

PM Andy Burnham appeals for 'calm on all sides'
The prime minister has just been speaking on the BBC about the parade, calling for calm to prevail.

“I know it’s a tense situation. We do appeal for calm on all sides,” he told Laura Kuenssberg on her politics show.

“There have been big gains made in Northern Ireland, and we don’t want to see things go backwards.

“So, obviously, a challenging situation today, but it’s very important that we work to bring calm.”

I actuallylike this article by Susan Pedersen, but this bit where a professorship at Columbia is imagined as a kind of hardship post is, even for the LRB, extremely LRB.
When I left more than two decades later, after fifteen years on the faculty and a few in administration, I missed so much about it: its heterodox but harmonious architecture, the Kabuki theatre of its faculty govern-ance, the many doors it opened, the wealth it oozed and the fact that, when things didn't work, the person you called didn't drily say, 'Welcome to Columbia,' but: 'I can take care of that for you, Professor Pedersen.' I never regretted leaving though, not just because I found Columbia's edgy students and argumentative faculty suited me, but still more because, in New York, no one cares that you're an Ivy League professor; you're just another resident of a crumbl-ing and glorious city. This is a great check on self-regard, and I found it unimaginably freeing.

I was left, though, with a healthy respect for Harvard's cultural power and, when I

The UK university sector is mired in absolute madness
Graduates would also receive a new “universal lifetime entitlement to careers support both while they are at university and throughout their career”, says the plan published on 9 September.
Every undergraduate would also be entitled to access artificial intelligence (AI) tools, the roadmap states, while every course should have a lecturer who is an “AI trailblazer” so that “graduates have the skills to be AI pioneers in the workplace”.

I gave a keynote to the excellent conference of the @irishhumanities.bsky.social yesterday. Got a bunch of things off my chest about healthcare in Irl, about privatisation, tech, the role of private equity, and the need for a critical sociological imagination in Irish medical humanities. Was good!
A man speaking at a podium in a church inder a large stained glass window. A slide kas a newspaper saying: head of rotunda: I'm sorry, I did not mean private care was safer than public.A slide giving the title of a talk: a sketch not a story, what can the medical humanities in Ireland achieve? There's a historical picture of the Pfizer plant in cork. The inside of an empty church viewed from the podium. There are rows of empty chairs and a wooden organ in the background.

It's sort of bleakly funny that one of this lad's main examples of self-evidently "ridiculous" ideological over-reach is the suggestion that decolonial perspectives might have some bearing on his Irish politics course.

Headline figures from a demos report: The polling shows that:

Net agreement with being proud to be a British citizen has fallen from 74% in 2011 to 47% in 2026.
Pride in British history has fallen from 65% to 39%.
