all that said, i agree with much of your analysis of the current situation re the upcoming election and i think you've laid it out very clearly. it's far from clear right now what'll happen.

its had moments of jumping forward (all provs/territories have), & places like mtl are certainly progressive, but they aren't qc's norm, & if we're looking at the bigger picture of qc, some of its least progressive tendencies are the same as they were 90+ years ago with new targets.

the vulnerable ppl the caq attacks (symbollically) started with women! who happened to wear hijab. & those attacks were built off 15+yrs of incessant "secularism" as national identity covering for racism, hatred of religious minorities, & misogyny. all of which are deeply entrenched in qc history

the caq is an extreme right wing political party which won a majority govt at its first election in 2018 in part after promising to do racism & to target muslim women specifically. qc is not "generally progressive." its conservatism just looks different & may be less amenable to coalition building.

Mr Blue Jay is also Indigenous. while jays fans and baseball fans celebrate his legacy as a player, manager, broadcaster, union rep, president of the baseball assistance team, his work with jays care, & so many other things, i hope that this part is not lost. i'm so glad they're celebrating him now

as buck martinez is rightfully being celebrated for his contributions to the blue jays, worth noting his is a member of the karuk tribe in california. in summer 2020, when children's unmarked graves were discovered on the grounds of old IRS, he supported survivors and the efforts at justice, on air.

this is not only an "over there" problem. ppl who make harming children & targeting minorities an explicit part of their politics have no place in public life and should be nowhere near the levers of power. but to actually keep them out, others need to step up with a compelling alternative vision.

tickets for working defence counsel being left unaddressed risks an impression of complacency or worse - acceptance. how can we expect ppl to trust the fairness of the criminal courts if violence against decendants' lawyers happens & it's business as usual?

this is a crisis for the criminal law system in oshawa and will remain so the longer it remains unaddressed by other parties to the system - especially the crown, who often rely on the police for evidence and arrests, & the court itself, which is often asks counsel to stay late. violence & trespass

another troubling question the incident raises is the protection of defendants' rights to, or exercised with the assistance of, counsel. if their lawyers' physical safety is at risk (& they risk criminal charges) for working, how can defendants be expected to believe the system is fair?
