Thinking about pitching @lrb.co.uk a piece on how classic books can in fact be adapted with significant changes into compelling films. Thx @pfbvan.bsky.social for this great summer read.
Book cover: First Blood, by David Morrell.

Today I'm reminded of the passage in Mark Carney's book "Value(s)" in which he reflects on touring the vaults of gold bars beneath the Bank of England with climate activist Greta Thunberg.
“That gilded hoard, nominally of great value, lying inert in a basement mocked the earlier conversation about the resources needed to fight climate change. With her, you are always conscious of misplaced priorities, of the time slipping away, of the need to rearrange national priorities and act. Now…

Greta Thunberg and the movement she represents give hope that society won’t settle. It won’t settle for worthy statements followed by futile gestures. It won’t settle for countries having plans for 2.8C of warming that they then don’t even meet. It won’t settle for companies that preach green but don’t manage their carbon footprints. It won’t settle for financial institutions who can’t tell whether their investments and loans are on the right or wrong side of climate history.”

Even Ken Sim's denials are damning. We need leaders who read, write, and think for themselves rather than incuriously worshipping the corporate algorithms and regurgitating their logic.
Sim says he used AI technology for personal learning, scanning news, tracking global and financial events, following “thought leaders,” and dietary planning.

Back from a family trip to Chile. Last stop was the general cemetary in Santiago, to pay respects to the memory of Salvador Allende. "Go forward knowing that, sooner rather than later, the great avenues will open again where free people will walk to build a better society."

Recommended reading, against the Donroe Doctrine... Finally finished Greg Grandin's latest doorstopper last week, an ambitious history and deep dive on Latin America's contributions to the development of international law in opposition to empire(s).

Having volunteered on and helped run socialist campaigns at the municipal level a few times here in Vancouver, what a joy it is to see the bar raised so spectacularly. May Zohran Mamdani's historic win inspire us all to continue and to scale-up our political courage & the audacity of our efforts.

THE GOOD CANADIAN premieres today on CBC & APTN, also available on CBC Gem & APTN Lumi. I hope you will take the time to watch this important movie that connects the dots between the injustices faced by Indigenous people. Proud to have been a researcher on this project. #truthandreconciliation

Beautiful new courts at Britannia. Great work by local community in collab with the non-profit Buckets and Borders. Imagine if we properly invested in social infrastructure in Vancouver: every school and public park could have courts/art like this!
