Shortly after that Bakker details came out that Bakker had drugged and raped a church secretary, Jessica Hahn, and paid hush money to her. Bakker's empire crumbled & he was sentenced to 45 years in prison... but only served 5, laughably. These creeps never face true justice.

They're all LOADED with shopping bags! They were on quite a spree. They practically bulldozed over me. They're both little people. I looked at them. They looked at me. Then I pointed and burst out laughing!

The mall was usually crowded. I didn't have any monet for random shopping, but there were a couple record stores & a Walden's Books-- the ONLY bookstore in all of West Palm! So I'm meandering through the main hall, when who comes bustling out of a store with their entourage? Jim and Tammy Faye!

Televangelist Jim Bakker-- seen here bawling as the FBI drags him away-- finally kicked the bucket. Age 86. WHY do these creeps never die young? He and his gruesome wife Tammy Faye were the faces of Christian Nationalism in the 1980s. Here's my Bakker story:

So the ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU, the infamous 1996 remake of the classic film, is apparently on heavy rotation on Roku streaming this month. What a train wreck! A decrepit Marlon Brando in his final starring role. Val Kilmer was completely insane, on and off screen. It's so bad it's fascinating!

And opposite of Floyd was Pere Ubu at a punk club on the shores of the Burning River. They played every Thursday in 1977. Saw them, too, maybe this very gig. It was like entering another dimension, full of mutants and weirdos.

Also in the issue is a fullpage ad for the Pink Floyd concert at Cleveland Stadium that weekend. I went. The Animals tour. It was epic, as was the traffic jam to get home. It was 3 am before I made it to my bed.

Luckily, the reviewer loved the new film, and avoided an embarrassing review like the one by the infamous John Simon, who hated it.

Came away with almost nothing from Baltimore Comic Con (I’m not paying dealer prices), but I did find this gem. A 1977 issue of Cleveland Scene with the Star Wars premiere! Scene was a free weekly rag, one that became MY home base 25 years later! How it wound up here, who knows. Fun read.

This is THE most comic con photo! At Baltimore Comic Con. A line of middle-aged comics dudes digging through the $2 bins. Love it.

Two local TV personalities hosted the festivities. "Cleveland is BACK!" brayed one as the balloons ascended. Within minutes, their feed was cut and the two quickly fled the scene. As did the corporate CEOs. It took weeks to clean up this nightmare. Balloons were washing up in Canada weeks later!

Derf Backderf @derfbackderf.bsky.social · 27/09/2026

The balloons fell to earth all over the city. Below is what Lake Erie looked like! They had to close both airports thanks to kamikaze balloons. A search for a pair of drowned fishermen was called off. The balloons dropped on highways causing accidents right and left. Total clusterfuck.

No one in charge did any research at all into what would happen. It was some shithead bros in the United Way office who arranged the whole thing.

A million balloons were released from Public Square as cameras rolled. At that exact moment, the wind changed direction and the balloons STALLED over downtown!

An epic dinner at Baltimore Comic Con. At a great Italian joint with L-R: my editor Charlie Kochman, Your Man, Howard Chaykin, David Armstrong, Desiree (our handler), Klaus Jansen, Chip Kidd, and Sidney the Service Dog. I grew up reading Howard's and Klaus' work! The conversation was dizzying.

The Sun had quite a cartoonist legacy. Starting with Richard Q. Yardley, who manned the chair from 1923 to 1979, and was a true original. Edmund Duffy won 3 Pulitzers in the 1930s. And the incredible Kevin Kallaugher was there for 30 years, until he was sacked by the rightwing CEO.
