The key thing is that the Brooklyn Democratic Party needs to honor the will of the voters. That means the newly elected District Leaders should be the ones selecting the new Party Chair, and that chair should be @juliopenabk.com -- the clear choice of a majority of duly-elected District Leaders!

The silver lining of the chaotic and undemocratic behavior we saw from Brooklyn Democratic Party leadership today is that it makes it clearer than ever that we need change. LID will keep on working every day to build a transparent and effective party worthy of our borough.

Brooklyn's elected Democratic leaders have spoken out overwhelmingly to condemn the Party Chair's attempted last-ditch rules changes. This kind of anti-democratic power grab goes against everything our party stands for, and it must not succeed.
Democratic Party leaders from Brooklyn overwhelmingly slammed Brooklyn Democratic Party Chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn’s announced plans to rewrite party rules in order to keep herself in power. Bichotte faces a coming leadership vote after a new majority of District Leaders, who make up the party’s Executive Committee, were elected by Brooklyn voters in the June primary. She is now trying to rig that vote in her favor by packing the committee with dozens of her handpicked supporters.

The following leaders have issued statements opposing the Chair’s proposed power grab: U.S. Reps. Hakeem Jeffries, Yvette Clarke, Nydia Velázquez; Democratic Congressional nominees Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Mike DeCillis; New York State Attorney General Letitia James; New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams; NYC Comptroller Mark Levine; New York State Senator Andrew Gounardes; New York State Assemblymembers Brian Cunningham, Robert Carroll, Jo Anne Simon, Phara Souffrant Forrest, and Emily Gallagher; NYC City Council Members Crystal Hudson, Jennifer Gutiérrez, Shahana Hanif, Sandy Nurse, Lincoln Restler, Chi Ossé, and Kayla Santosuosso; and New York State Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs.

They are joined by many past, present, and future Democratic District Leaders, including Bichotte Hermelyn's co-leader in Assembly District 42, Josué Pierre, who said in a statement: "Our party should respect the choices voters made at the ballot box. I will be voting no on this proposal."

An Anti-Democratic Power Grab: LID responds to Brooklyn Party Dem Boss's proposed changes to Executive Committee and calls on Brooklyn Democratic voters and leaders to reject these proposals.
LID Statement beginning reading:

An Anti-Democratic Power Grab: LID Response to Brooklyn Dems Party Boss Bichotte Hermelyn's Proposed Rules Changes.

"These profoundly anti-democratic actions from the party boss are aimed at stopping the election of Brooklyn's first queer party chair."Part 2 of LID statement reading:

In June, Brooklyn Democrats voted overwhelmingly for change at all levels, including new Democratic Party leadership. LID was proud to join the Brooklyn Can’t Wait coalition, which successfully advocated for change across the borough. Now, 1.2 Million Democrats in Brooklyn could be rendered voiceless as a result of the actions of Brooklyn Democratic Party Boss Bichotte Hermelyn.

This past June, registered Brooklyn Democrats spoke out and overwhelmingly voted to elect more reform-minded District Leaders, who comprise the members of the county Democratic party’s Executive Committee. This committee steers the party’s direction in terms of focus and policy, judicial nominations and millions of dollars in donor funds. Our incumbent and incoming reform district leaders have selected District Leader, longtime reformer and LID Board Member Julio Peña III of Sunset Park to be the next county party chair. Julio will be our party’s first openly queer chair.
Part 3 of LID statement reading:

However, faced with the prospect of losing control, chair Bichotte Hermelyn has proposed stacking the deck. Her latest proposal would swell the number of executive committee members to 68. The proposed change to the executive committee would allow unelected officers to have the same weight and power as democratically elected officials. This is a radical move that undoes the spirit of democracy and the power of the vote.

These profoundly anti-democratic actions from the party boss are aimed at stopping the election of Brooklyn’s first queer party chair.

While couched in the name of greater participation, it is highly likely that these additional members won’t sit without the Chair’s approval. LID has been fighting for reform and transparency in the county party since its inception in 1978. If this proposal is being done in the name of greater participation, then we ask: why wait until you’re about to lose?
Part 4 of LID statement reading:

In a time where we face increasing attacks on our communities and democracy, we call on all Brooklyn Democrats and elected officials to reject this blatant attempt to nullify the will of Democratic voters. LID calls on all elected officials and party leaders to publicly condemn the proposed rule change. Please call your elected officials at the city, state, and federal level today and call on them to reject this undemocratic power grab!

For those who are not plugged into Brooklyn politics, yes, it is odd to have a Democratic Party chair who seems to hate democracy. For those of you who are plugged into Brooklyn politics, no surprised here.

Brooklyn Can't Wait wasn't created to "overthrow" anyone. It united clubs around the District Leader Pledge which formalized a shared standard of transparency and accountability. That's what kept us together through disagreements on candidates and what prevents reform from becoming another machine.
