Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 02/10/2026What does it take to help an entire faculty learn and adopt new teaching practices? Inspired by that MIT AI report, on the blog I share three principles for faculty development needed to scale AI-aware teaching from individual courses to an entire campus. derekbruff.org/2026/10/02/s... 010
Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 02/10/2026On my board game podcast today, I take a deep dive into the design of games that work across diverse ages and cognitive abilities with Dylan Kistler, a colleague from my Vanderbilt days. Dylan's new company, Kistler Games, specializes in such games! firstplayertoken.buzzsprout.com/2292265/epis... 020
Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 30/09/2026We had at least a dozen of these scholars at Vanderbilt back in the day! HASTAC was an incredible networking opportunity for our graduate students, especially those with an interest in the digital humanities. 110
Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 30/09/2026The first two episodes are out, and I'm looking forward to listening. @anya1anya.bsky.social does great work, and this is an important topic. 021
Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Yeah, because this approach to grading sure has held back MIT over the years. 🫠 030
Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I love that Jack Smith reacts like a totally normal person. You can see him thinking, “Um, yeah, I would have to check my Google Calendar.” 021

Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 27/09/2026So the Divinity faculty aren’t sure why the school is in receivership. That’s a good sign. Sigh. 110
Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Some of yesterday’s birds from Sarapiqui, Costa Rica. Three of these belong to families that don’t even appear in Tennessee! #birding 030

Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 22/09/2026We've been developing promising practices for responding to AI at the course level, but what about at the curricular level? Today on the podcast, we hear how UC Berkeley Public Health has been defining program-level AI competencies. intentionalteaching.buzzsprout.com/2069949/epis... 000
Reposted by Derek BruffMarc Watkins @marcwatkins.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Physical copies of The Norton Guide To AI-Aware teaching have arrived! @derekbruff.bsky.social @anetv.bsky.social, and I wrote about approaches teachers can use to raise awareness about AI’s impact on learning. The guide is loaded with ideas to help students learn about AI, without AI, and with AI. 122

Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 16/09/2026To that end, have you found anyone using your drawn statement in a setting where they're trying to help students use AI effectively and intentionally? I'm guessing not, but I can imagine such a thing. 110
Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Of course, AI is marketed as that A-to-B path, but lots of technologies are marketed in ways we can often ignore. We can often do with the tech what we want to do with it, and if we're intentional about the ways we use AI, I think it can support creative processes. 110
Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 16/09/2026What's curious about this drawn statement is that it doesn't explicitly mention AI. In an educational context, it could apply just as well to paying someone to write a paper for you. It also doesn't preclude the use of AI, as long as its use is supporting the indirect path toward learning. 210
Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 15/09/2026The 2004 series, which I can’t believe is that old. Bear McCreary’s score is amazing. 000

Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 15/09/2026So Auburn's board decided this summer that they will have primary responsibility for the curriculum, even though (a) they lack the curricular expertise that faculty have and (b) Auburn's accreditor (SACS) requires faculty to have that responsibility. Things are not well at Auburn. 010
Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Episode 100 of my Intentional Teaching podcast is right around the corner! I would love your help making it a special one. Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Fixing up the transcript for last week's episode. I thought that the acronym TEK was a challenge--AI transcribed it as "tech" about a hundred times in the episode--then I got to the Schitts Creek reference. #facepalm 010
Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 13/09/2026TIL that I don't have to live with Windows Explorer's default column headings for folders full of MP3s. I knew you could edit columns for a specific folder--I didn't know you could apply to all folders with MP3s. Because my podcast recordings don't need "Album" or "Contributing Artists" columns! 020
Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 11/09/2026How can humanities courseshelp students develop the durable skills--communication, collaboration, adaptability--that employers want? Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 10/09/2026Um, isn't this a new form of CGI? It would be like giving Mike Wazowski an Oscar, instead of Billy Crystal or the Pixar animators. 010

Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 08/09/2026Credit to Michael “How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming” Brown for that analogy, which he used to explain why a “dwarf planet” (e.g. Pluto) is not a planet. 010
Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 08/09/2026“Artificial intelligence” is to intelligence as “stuffed animals” is to animals. The one is inspired by the other while not being a type of the other. 120
Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 07/09/2026This sounds a lot like the objections I heard ~15 years ago when university libraries started taking physical books and journals out of their facilities. Somehow we managed that transition. Maybe we can manage a transition from database search interfaces to LLM search interfaces? Maybe not? 211

Derek Bruff @derekbruff.bsky.social · 01/09/2026This might have been the strongest version of guidance they could manage. I saw in the report a healthy subtext of faculty autonomy, and the report seems aimed at persuading individual faculty to approach their individual course design differently. 240
