In my last role (in a hospital), we enjoyed using it with the other Posit tools (like Connect) and then used additional tooling where/when necessary or preferred

Partial and (only slightly) more serious update on this IEEE just sort of choosing to not respond or acknowledge so that's cool. They must be busy encouraging more plagiarism so I get it

Space: Above and Beyond, if you can find it? A mostly good earlier show with a lot of interesting themes. Unfortunately only 1 season.

"basic" or "classic" ML and stats are thrown in too. And rules-based. eg: mayomagazine.mayoclinic.org/2026/04/ai-i... It's exceptionally difficult when each person in a conversation has a different concept of AI. And it causes a lot of confusion for those trying to navigate

Tony Cheese has some fascinating things lately at the Evergreen Brickworks market

per usual, this is a pizza account. Vaguely New Haven-ish. Blood orange cheddar, mozzarella, ricotta, squash blossoms (all obtained from the farmers market). Olive oil, salt, pepper, lemon zest

Today I officially became an academic* of our times: a pretty clear plagiarism case of one of my preprints turned into someone else's conference submission. Truly blessed that my work has *finally* been recognized and appreciated! *I'm no longer in academia

"What if a cocktail but it's pizza?" Dolce provolone, whiskey barrel smoked cheddar, cherries, orange and lime zest. then topped with a whiskey, bitters, citrus, and sugar glaze.

Tonight, the dough cooperated. Purple kholrabi, yellow squash, dolce provolone, olive oil. Finished with dill, korean pepper flakes, tallegio, and pear white balsamic vinegar.

Derek Beaton @derek--beaton.bsky.social · 15/07/2026

we all know by now what this account is all about purple kholrabi, yellow squash, spring(early summer?) onions, fruilano, tallegio, celery salt, korean red pepper flakes. All on a particularly uncooperative dough (which is why we pivot to pans, kids)

One of the most delightful parts of this map is you can see the terminal layout of Logan airport.

for, I believe, 75 CAD: yes why not. submit anything. worst case you get a politely worded rejection with an apology and probably instructions on how to try again (realer answer: various birth/death/marriage certs and newspaper clippings are apparently typucally accepted)

Any. Literally any number back so long as (1) it's parents of parents of parents, etc... and (2) it can be proven through some documentation

you can work out a lot of the problems with LLMs just from sort of intuition and a rough familiarity with how to run a PCA

In 2019, scientists velcro'd 3D glasses to European common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) They didn't do this just to make them look cool as fuck, but in order to study their vision. Using a 3D theatre made for the cuttlefish, they were able to test if cuttlefish have stereo vision (they do!)

Our PhD student Kennedy Orwa, who studies applications of AI to health care, was hastily deported today to Kenya along with his 13-year-old son without opportunity to speak to legal counsel. King 5 reports that he held a valid visa that was rescinded without explanation.

This landmark Toronto grafitti has longevity (it's been at Brickworks for at least 5 years) Plus it's the meanest (and greenest) graffiti this city has to offer

Also weird that it is, to some degree, giving credit to a company like that. Also extra weird because we don't acknowledge other tools in the same way (like linters, IDEs)

if performance for forecasting/predicting is suitable and automated, does input matter much? eg two models could have identical performance (auc, prec/recall) but completely different inputs, transformations, or modeling approaches. and those choices (with caveats) likely matter less than output

I like to read comics to disconnect. And then the new (Marvel) Ultimates goes and throws some LaTeX typesetting in the proper orientation for the character but backwards for the reader and I'm now just really stressed this won't compile correctly. I am not having a good time right now!
