After a years-long search, Pedro Rios-Lopez was arrested this week in Mexico. On April 28, 2012, Rios-Lopez stabbed to death his wife, Berta Rios-Lopez, in her house on South Bryant Street in Denver. Rios-Lopez has been charged with First-Degree Murder and is awaiting extradition back to Denver

A Denver grand jury has returned an indictment charging 12 defendants with 187 counts of engaging in a wide-ranging, multi-state scheme involving multiple car thefts, forgeries, and car theft through predatory towing.

Stig Strong was sentenced today to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted in April of First-Degree Murder.On April 18, 2023, Strong murdered 34-year-old Jonathan Douglas outside Douglas' home in the La Alma-Lincoln Park neighborhood. @denverpolice.bsky.social

On March 8, 2025, approximately two hours after robbing a convenience store on south Colorado Boulevard, Vega shot and killed 35-year-old David Maffet in a house in the 2900-block of South Vine Street.

Augustine Vega was sentenced today to 76 years in prison. In August, Vega was convicted at trial of eight counts, including Second-Degree Murder, Aggravated Robbery, and Burglary.

In January 2023, Avery met the 17-year-old victim near Civic Center Park and brought her to a house in Aurora, where Avery gave her methamphetamines in exchange for sex. She stayed with him for a few days, left and then was brought back to the Aurora home by Avery.

Carl Avery was sentenced today to 128 years in prison after being convicted in June of three counts of Patronizing of a Child Prostitute and three counts of Distributing Controlled Substances to a Minor.

In January of this year, Mantych was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of First-Degree Murder. Mantych killed 28-year-old Marina Placensia on board the train they were riding from Wisconsin to Denver in September of 2016.

Tyler Nelson was sentenced today to 40 years in prison after being convicted last month of Second-Degree Murder. On September 24, 2024, Nelson shot and killed his wife, 30-year-old Breanna Canter, in their apartment in the 600-block of South Dayton Street.

Innis Collins has been sentenced to 32 years in the Department of Corrections after pleading guilty last month to Second-Degree Murder. On April 22, 2022, Collins strangled his girlfriend, 19-year-old Namantha Noller Rice, in his Denver apartment.

In December 2023, Brice, who was 34 years old at the time, began engaging in sexual conduct with the victim, who was just 14. Approximately one month later, Brice attempted to force her into commercial sex work. When she refused, Brice brutally assaulted her.

Joe Griggs-Sanders was sentenced late yesterday afternoon to 42 years in prison after pleading guilty in September to Second-Degree Murder. On November 14, 2024, Griggs-Sanders shot 16-year-old Adrian Ounnar while Adrian was in a car on East 61st Avenue in northeast Denver.

Patrick Apostol was sentenced today to 48 years in prison after being convicted in June of Second-Degree Murder. On September 10, 2020, Apostol shot and killed 31-year-old Zackary Smith in an alley behind 1725 Quince Street in east Denver.

Jakiem Whitham was sentenced today to life in prison without the possibility of parole. On July 17, Whitham was convicted at trial of numerous charges, including First-Degree Murder and Attempted Murder.

In November 2024, he drove her to Colorado and told her that, if she made less than $500 for him per night, she would not be allowed in the house. Blackman controlled the victim by threatening her and her family. He also abused her physically and sexually.

Dajon Blackman was sentenced today to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to Human Trafficking for Sexual Servitude and Pimping. In February of 2024, Blackman recruited and trafficked a 25-year-old victim in California.

The Conspiracy charge was in connection to the shooting death of 28-year-old Michael Milligan near Cheesman Park on November 30, 2023. The Attempted Assault charge was in connection to an unrelated non-fatal shooting in October of 2023.

Armoni Patterson was sentenced today to 45 years in prison. On July 10, 2026, Patterson pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Commit Murder in the Second Degree and Attempt to Commit Assault in the First Degree.

In addition to the 17 people who were arrested and charged, the operation also resulted in the seizure of approximately 46 weapons; 15 pounds of cocaine, with an approximate street value of more than $100,000; 9 vehicles; $100,000 in jewelry; $35,000 in cash; and 5 pipe bombs.

On June 8, 2024, Gurule drove the car that was used during the murder of 29-year-old Manuel Quintana at a gas station in west Denver. On May 1 of this year, Gurule was convicted at trial.

Simon Gurule was sentenced today to a total of 40 years in prison: 30 years for Second-Degree Murder and 10 years for First-Degree Assault. He was also sentenced to four years in prison for Accessory to a Crime, but that sentence will run concurrently to the 40-year sentence.
