After a years-long search, Pedro Rios-Lopez was arrested this week in Mexico. On April 28, 2012, Rios-Lopez stabbed to death his wife, Berta Rios-Lopez, in her house on South Bryant Street in Denver. Rios-Lopez has been charged with First-Degree Murder and is awaiting extradition back to Denver

A Denver grand jury has returned an indictment charging 12 defendants with 187 counts of engaging in a wide-ranging, multi-state scheme involving multiple car thefts, forgeries, and car theft through predatory towing.

Stig Strong was sentenced today to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted in April of First-Degree Murder.On April 18, 2023, Strong murdered 34-year-old Jonathan Douglas outside Douglas' home in the La Alma-Lincoln Park neighborhood. @denverpolice.bsky.social

Augustine Vega was sentenced today to 76 years in prison. In August, Vega was convicted at trial of eight counts, including Second-Degree Murder, Aggravated Robbery, and Burglary.

Carl Avery was sentenced today to 128 years in prison after being convicted in June of three counts of Patronizing of a Child Prostitute and three counts of Distributing Controlled Substances to a Minor.

Tyler Nelson was sentenced today to 40 years in prison after being convicted last month of Second-Degree Murder. On September 24, 2024, Nelson shot and killed his wife, 30-year-old Breanna Canter, in their apartment in the 600-block of South Dayton Street.

Innis Collins has been sentenced to 32 years in the Department of Corrections after pleading guilty last month to Second-Degree Murder. On April 22, 2022, Collins strangled his girlfriend, 19-year-old Namantha Noller Rice, in his Denver apartment.

DA Walsh presented the award for "Outstanding Achievement in Criminal and Constitutional Law" during today's graduation ceremony at the Denver Police Training Academy, where 31 new Denver Police officers were sworn-in. Congratulations to all of the new officers!

Naheem Brice was sentenced today to 42 years to life in prison after being convicted in July of Attempted Human Trafficking of a Minor, Attempted Pimping of a Child, Assault with Extreme Indifference, Child Abuse, Distribution of Drugs to a Minor and Sex Assault on a Child.

Joe Griggs-Sanders was sentenced late yesterday afternoon to 42 years in prison after pleading guilty in September to Second-Degree Murder. On November 14, 2024, Griggs-Sanders shot 16-year-old Adrian Ounnar while Adrian was in a car on East 61st Avenue in northeast Denver.

Patrick Apostol was sentenced today to 48 years in prison after being convicted in June of Second-Degree Murder. On September 10, 2020, Apostol shot and killed 31-year-old Zackary Smith in an alley behind 1725 Quince Street in east Denver.

Jakiem Whitham was sentenced today to life in prison without the possibility of parole. On July 17, Whitham was convicted at trial of numerous charges, including First-Degree Murder and Attempted Murder.

Dajon Blackman was sentenced today to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to Human Trafficking for Sexual Servitude and Pimping. In February of 2024, Blackman recruited and trafficked a 25-year-old victim in California.

Armoni Patterson was sentenced today to 45 years in prison. On July 10, 2026, Patterson pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Commit Murder in the Second Degree and Attempt to Commit Assault in the First Degree.

Augustine Vega was convicted today of eight counts, including Second-Degree Murder, Aggravated Robbery, and Burglary. On March 8, 2025, Vega shot and killed 35-year-old David Maffet in the 2900-block of South Vine Street. Vega will be sentenced on October 2.

Simon Gurule was sentenced today to a total of 40 years in prison: 30 years for Second-Degree Murder and 10 years for First-Degree Assault. He was also sentenced to four years in prison for Accessory to a Crime, but that sentence will run concurrently to the 40-year sentence.

The statewide grand jury has indicted 11 defendants on 52 counts for allegedly carrying out a widespread motor vehicle theft ring that targeted vehicles parked at small municipal airports along the Front Range between July 2024 and January 2025.

A Denver jury has convicted Matthew O’Mara of two counts of First-Degree Murder.  On December 7, 2022, O’Mara stabbed to death 20-year-old Taylor Trevino and seriously injured 56-year-old Christina Harden in an apartment in the 10100 block of East Harvard Avenue.

Simon Gurule was convicted at trial today of Second-Degree Murder, First-Degree Assault, and Accessory to a Crime. On June 8, 2024, Gurule drove the car that was used during the murder of 29-year-old Manuel Quintana at a gas station in west Denver.

Rafael Acosta-Hernandez pleaded guilty today to one count of Second-Degree Murder.  On March 6, 2025, Acosta-Hernandez shot and killed 25-year-old Leonel Silva-Perez in the 26-hundred block of North Zuni Street.  Acosta-Hernandez faces up to 38 years in prison when he’s sentenced on July 10.

DA Walsh joined several members of our office at last night's fundraiser for Restorative Denver, a program designed to address crime, harm and public safety through a community-based restorative justice program. The recidivism rate after one year for people in the program is a remarkably low 1.9%.

Ricky Dawson was sentenced today to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted last month of First-Degree Murder. On October 5, 1996, Dawson sexually assaulted and murdered 35-year-old Terri Turachak in Turachak’s east Denver apartment.

For #DenimDay, members of our office wore jeans today in solidarity with survivors of sexual assault. In 1999, an Italian judge decided a woman could not have been raped because her jeans were so tight that she must have helped her perpetrator remove them.

Luis Rivas-Newcomb was sentenced today to 48 years in prison after pleading guilty in December to Second-Degree Murder. On April 8, 2022, Rivas-Newcomb fired into another vehicle at the 38th and Peoria overpass.

Ricky Roybal-Smith pleaded guilty today to Second-Degree Murder and Driving Under the Influence and was sentenced to a total of 56 years in prison. On June 30, 2025, Roybal-Smith strangled 34-year-old Vincent Chacon in the jail cell the two men were sharing at the Denver Jail.

Gabriel Peterson has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after previously pleading guilty to one count of Human Trafficking of a Minor. In July of 2024, Peterson recruited a 15-year-old girl to perform commercial sex acts in the Denver metro area.
