As expected a fabulous concert (though they took a long time coming to the stage and Dunford kept fiddling with his lute - pun not intended - so I wonder if he’d let it fall or something). The soloists were ravishing, including Petit, who has a stunning silvery soprano voice. #gorgeous

A Dowland evening for me tonight. A lot of the same works as I saw Jupiter & Dunford perform last year with Lea Desandre, but if this concert is half as good, I shall be a happy bunny indeed. Great soloists. My second Cutting brother at this venue within a week. Don’t think I know Mélissa Petit. 🕺

In concert it was at times like you could hear the big Wagnerian bass-bariton roles standing in the wings. Also, he has a lot of presence on stage. Real star quality.

The Muziekgebouw concert hall dwarfed by a (not even very big) cruise ship. Plus a view of it from another angle (behind another stretch of water and buildings with a rail track running behind them), plus a cute cafe I didn’t know about in this neck of the woods). #Amsterdam

Bloody heck, that was good. A joy to see Soller start her first season at the Netherlands Bach Society with such a terrific concert. #glorious

Statement of intent? The first half was more like a manifesto, as Soller started with JC’s brilliant “Es erhub sich ein streit”, gloriously done by all involved (the copper!). I was in tears within seconds. Good lord (!), what fabulous music-making. #brilliant

The programme of Netherlands Bach Society’s first concert of the season this afternoon reads like a real statement of intent from new artistic leader Johanna Soller. Can’t think of musicians and soloists who I’d rather hear in this baroque-contemporary double bill. #HIP 🦄

Concept alert. But what fun! A kind of cabaret meets classical approach to… well, you name it, from Purcell, the American Songbook, The Queen of the Night and Danny Boy, to E lucevan le stelle and (oh yes) Tannhäuser. All accompanied by ukelele and/or accordion. Best enjoyed with a naughty drink. 🕺

Another delicious new release: a fascinating programme by the divine Sandrine Piau (Cleopatra next to Beth Taylor’s Cornelia last season) and wonderful accompanist David Kadouch. #FairytaleStuff

Hurrah! Beth Taylor’s magnificent Cornelia on disc. She made such an impression in last season’s Giulio Cesare with il Pomo d’Oro that toured Europe. As for that performance, the other singers look pretty magnificent here too. #listening #Händel

Attended a semi professional musical in Amsterdam’s so called fringe festival. The performance was not really my thing, but I was surprised by the interior of the venue (which I didn’t know): the wonderful (Le Corbusier inspired) Thomas Church by Karel Sijmons from 1966. #architecture

Another fantastic concert. The band played superbly, particularly the strings (special shout out for solo 🎻 Louise Ayrton). And Eva Zaïcik was fabulous. A gorgeous voice and a ROCK solid technique that makes it all sound effortless. The Nisi Dominus was a real event, brilliantly done by all. 😍

That was 🤩. Pulcinella were superb and Piau was out of this world. Her encore: Händel’s “Convey me to some peaceful shore” (her recording is a desert island disc of mine). I was a mess. I think she saw (middle front row balcony). At the end she blew a hand kiss up. Probably not to me, but still… 😇😉❤️

And tonight Vincent Dumestre and his Le Poème Harmonique, with soloist Eva Zaïcik in a Venetian programme with, amongst other’s Vivaldi’s Nisi Dominus (thankfully in the festival’s centrally located main Tivolivredenburg concert hall). #Venice #baroque

Two concerts by French ensembles today at #UtrechtEarlyMusicFestival, with a lot of Italian music. First Pulcinella and Sandrine Piau in a (1930s) church in a suburb of Utrecht. It’ll be an adventure getting there, but very much worth it, I’m sure! #baroque

A wonderful concert. It was great to hear this programme live. Though, McCreesh not doing much spatially in the hall (bar both choir and band starting off-stage, and sackbuts sounding on a balcony), I feel it is perhaps more successful as a recreation of a Venetian coronation on disc. #HIP

…and this evening Paul McCreesh and his Gabrieli Consort & Players will recreate a coronation in Venice from 1595. Their famous recording of it is a favourite, so I’m looking forward to being able to experience it live (and presumable in the round) in TivoliVredenburg’s octagonal main hall.

Two more concerts at #UtrechtEarlyMusicFestival today. First Simon-Pierre Bestion again with his La Têmpete with a mix of old and new, from Gregorian chant to Pärt…

talking under their breath, and making sounds with a few unidentified objects. All the while in semi-darkness. And of course the singing was top-notch. Plus a suoerb programme of old and new. Breathtaking stuff. I loved every minute. 2/2 #UtrechtEarlyMusicFestival

An extraordinary concert by Bestion and La Tempête, who didn’t play instruments so much as the concert hall itself, with processions, singing in different formations in various locations, and light effects. At one point the choir evoked night sounds by walking among the audience, murmering… 1/2

Tonight’s big concert is staged (note that a lighting designer and a technical manager are listed) by the inimitable Simon-Pierre Bestion and his La Tempête: a “Nocturne of Loss and Hope”. Can’t wait… #UtrechtEarlyMusicFestival
