I quit using Google for search several years ago. The enshitification was becoming evident. There are better alternatives.

Except if you watch the ad, she said the exact opposite. She showed scare-mongering anti-trans attack ads from her opponent. Said it was not true (her phrasing could be better, but with only 30 seconds it is tough to express nuance). Then said that she is focussed on corruption and cost of living.

What’s missed in the admin’s change of heart is that the two candidates in question were asked to adjust their disclosures to comply, and they refused. What is the point of having disclosure rules if they can be willfully disregarded without consequence?

In my race, the note for my disclosure has a straight forward explanation (small clients, none exceeding the reporting threshold last year), and the note on my opponent’s disclosure looks like a copy/paste error. I’m sure we would both be responsive if APOC inquired.

denmermr.bsky.social @denmermr.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
If APOC inquired with the other candidates, asking if they could clarify discrepancies or more fully comply with the rules, I’m sure most would have clear explanations or promptly file amended forms to comply.

“I said I would endorse first place. B is first. Consistent with my prior commitment, I endorse B” is such a tepid endorsement. In my first race, someone literally made a write-in vote for “Ham Sandwich” - would NB3 endorse a Ham Sandwich if it won the R Primary?

…it convinced me a single payer system would not only benefit workers, but businesses as well. When you consider that it would cost us less overall as a country too, it really begs the question: whose interests are served by the status quo?

I spent time in upper management at a company w/ ~250 employees. The time & energy we spent deciding whether health plan increases could be passed to employees (that’s a pay cut) vs taken from the bottom line (thin already) vs reducing benefits…

Imagine trying to navigate this as a student w/out digital resources at home. No wonder colleges have been moving away from standardized tests as criteria in admission. A ton of brilliant kids who would thrive in higher education do not have wealth or resources like this at home.
020
denmermr.bsky.social @denmermr.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Now, the day before the test, my daughter must login to their site and download an app to a device to access her admission ticket. No fine print available to enable test access with a device provided by the testing company. Unbelievable. We have an iPad an an ancient laptop. iPad it is I guess.

denmermr.bsky.social @denmermr.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Now, there’s an entire overlay of digital resource access discrimination. They are really REALLY pushing you to come to their testing site & take the test ON YOUR OWN DEVICE. Our kids don’t have their own devices. When we signed up, we found the fine print option to have them provide a device.

My daughter is taking the SAT tomorrow. Do you know how phenomenally stupid and discriminatory modern standardized testing is? The discriminatory issues used to be mostly confined to the content of the questions, and whether people from different backgrounds might understand them the same way.

I like the general sentiment of making UA more affordable and attracting more students. I’m glad that’s on their radar, even if my gut reaction is skeptical of this specific approach.

for out-of-state students to stick around through the summer to become residents. This is how my wife became an Alaska resident. If there were no tuition advantage, she may have returned out of state for the summers, and left the state entirely upon graduation. That said…

denmermr.bsky.social @denmermr.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
If they have funds to reduce tuition, my 2¢ is to reduce in-state tuition first. As a first-generation college student without tuition support from my parents, UAF’s low in-state tuition is the only way I could afford a college degree. And 2 - reduced in-state tuition provides an incentive

denmermr.bsky.social @denmermr.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
It is interesting indeed. My gut reaction is negative, for 2 reasons. 1 - our universities should be as affordable as possible for Alaskan residents, because they are the ones most likely to stick around with their degrees and add to the community.

A 7/4 event at Mountain City Church, dubbed “America Comes Alive”. MRA’s podcast interviewed the organizer in a 6/19 episode. It sounds like it was right at the nexus of cool historic artifact collections and extreme “we were started as a Christian Country” conspiracy theorizing wrapped in flags.

This is the ad as it was fed to me by the youtubes
Photo of Ron Hoffman, lead pastor at Mountain City Church, outside with mountains in the background. From a pro-Dan Sullivan advertisements. Photo is overlayed with the following caption: “Ron: Bristol Bay Fisherman”

denmermr.bsky.social @denmermr.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
Here is the photo from its original MRA source. Flag count seems to include: Gadsden x2 Continental Union Flag (immediately pre-independence) 13 Star US flag (original) 15 Star flag 34 Star Flag (Civil War Era) Confederate Battle Flag 48 Star flag (immediately before AK Statehood) 50 Star flag

This tidbit in the news article is rich w/ understatement. Hoffman, lead pastor at Mountain City Church, did not appear in the pro-Sullivan ads. A church explicitly engaged in partisan politics is a bad look. So Bristol Bay Fisherman Ron was in the ads. Same guy. Just being intentionally deceptive.

denmermr.bsky.social @denmermr.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
And the middle flag is a civil-war-era 34 star flag. I feel like a specific message is being sent in that collection of flags.

Whoa - cool. That’s exactly where I was guessing it might be, but I’ve never seen it with a berm and barrier posts. Then again, my earliest travels on that road were probably in the mid-70’s, and my earliest firm memories of Polychrome probably date to ‘92, the first summer I worked in Denali.

That doesn’t look like any stretch of the Denali NP road I’m familiar with. In particular the berm on the downhill side. The closest I can think of is Polychrome Pass - but no berm there. License plate looks like it might be Colorado. Wonder if this is mislabeled from somewhere in the Rockies?

The neighbors here have been bringing this to the Sand Lake Community Council, advocating with local, state and federal leaders for help for years. Water mains go past the end of their street. Safe water is not too much to ask.

Ah, so Low Max is the coldest high temp? That’s why I’m wearing a jacket now. Got it.

Isn’t “Low Max” the warmest cool temp, rather than the “coolest”? Or am I misunderstanding the verbiage in the data table?

As a dude who walked away from a day job to be a freelancing at home parent when we had our second kid, because the cost of childcare was/is unsustainable, I feel this. As my kids get older, I see more other dads around their activities, but before age ~5, I was often the only dad in their spaces.

Homer, Valdez, and Tok are end points on our road system in need of fast chargers. Co-locating them with fast food (Glennallen - Subway) or groceries (Trapper Creek, Cooper Landing, Sterling - 3 Bears, Fairbanks & Anchorage - Fred Meyer) seems like a win-win for the business and the driver.

You are correct. After the explosion, it changed, and was some form of food establishment whose primary draw to me as a teenager was the video games. My parents missed their DQ’s, and made it a point to visit the one in Soldotna if they ever ventured that far south.

The general format hasn’t changed since then. My parents used to read the milepost whenever we did road trips when I was a kid. They have people out driving the highways every year to keep up with the routes as they evolve.

If you haven’t already, pick up a physical copy of the current year’s (or a recent year) Milepost. It has all the stops covered.

That may be true from the slope to Fairbanks, but this plan goes from there to Nikiski rather than Valdez, so there is surely a lot of new ground to cover.

Tom Begich would (hopefully will) be an amazing Governor… but I wouldn’t want him to unilaterally exclude someone from the ballot because he didn’t like their political perspectives any more than I want Dunleavy or Dahlstrom to have that unilateral power.

Hope it gets put out soon. I’ll be traveling that road to go on the Swan Lake Canoe Trail next month. I hope we don’t have to cancel the trip like we did for the fire in 2019. Come to think of it… my profile pic is from the middle of the Swan Lake Canoe Trail.

Why? Matt Schulz is pretty awesome - funny, solidly centered on protecting the working class & poor & marginalized, solidly anti-christian-nationalism, and his help facilitating a big piece in our homelessness response was solid. His “What Divines Us” podcast with Rabbi Abrams was super thoughtful.

The form is pg 3 here www.elections.alaska.gov/doc/forms/Up... It doesn’t ask if someone else sponsored your candidacy. It doesn’t ask if you are being shady or cynical in your choice of party affiliation. It’s a pretty simple form. I wonder what their theory of untruthfulness could be?

That’s kind of weird. Having just filled it out myself, the candidacy form asks if you completed the APOC disclosure, asks your name (both your legal name & the name you want to use on the ballot), your address, the seat you are running for, and the party affiliation you want shown by your name.

Ultimately, both district and muni education funding shortfalls rest squarely with the state, who defines our per-student funding in statute. In that sense, the state, muni, and district all don’t have money for the same reason. But the reason rests singularly with the state.
010
denmermr.bsky.social @denmermr.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
If the muni doesn’t fund to the max allowed by statute, it’s largely because state revenue sharing has fallen off a cliff (and because budget cycles are not aligned - muni budgets are passed in the spring. State’s in early summer, subject to veto and override as late as the following January).
100
denmermr.bsky.social @denmermr.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
The school district doesn’t have the money because state statute literally tells them how much money they will “need” per student, and they have to shoehorn their budget into that number. The muni’s obligation is bounded by statute, both high and low, as a percent of the “need” the state defines.
100
denmermr.bsky.social @denmermr.bsky.social · 06/06/2026
Hopefully your story will focus on the fact that in Alaska, school districts don’t decide their own funding levels. State statute literally tells our school what their “basic need” per student will be, and school districts have to shoehorn education into that budget from the state.

A NAS at home would be a reasonable replacement of a small cloud presence. They can be pretty complex if you want… but there are some simple user-friendly ones as well. A Synology Beestation might hit the sweet spot of functionality and user friendliness.

It seems noteworthy that the authors are from Europe. Suppose some Pacific Islanders determined that damning the straights of Gibraltar or building a sea wall from the US to Cuba would help stabilize their ocean currents. Would that get a casual writeup in the NYT?
