My daughter is taking the SAT tomorrow. Do you know how phenomenally stupid and discriminatory modern standardized testing is? The discriminatory issues used to be mostly confined to the content of the questions, and whether people from different backgrounds might understand them the same way.

The neighbors here have been bringing this to the Sand Lake Community Council, advocating with local, state and federal leaders for help for years. Water mains go past the end of their street. Safe water is not too much to ask.

They are suing the wrong entity. The state is responsible for school funding levels. They literally dictate per-student funding in state statute. The school district is closing schools not out of malice, but because the legislature and governor refuse to recognize that inflation is real.

Public transit operators are awesome. One day 2 years ago I couldn’t pick my oldest kids after school - they had to walk a mile to their brother’s school for me to get them. A muni bus driver saw them on an icy day and proactively pulled over to pick them up. As Mr Roger said, look for the helpers.

This is a terrible headline that frames our school funding system as if we SHOULD be flat-funding and 100% ignoring inflation. We should be framing our discussion to assume that “flat funding” means keeping up with inflation. In very real terms, anything less is a cut.

Those who bid to take a “minimum” bonus will continue as warrant officers, and this is encouraging them to bid their “true value.” In their own terms, they are literally seeking to degrade our military by retaining only the warrant officers of the least “true value” to the organization. Astounding.

Seward was gorgeous this past weekend.

St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Seward, Alaska. Church is a traditional small red-brick church with a steeple on the far end of the roof and a cross on the near end.
