I'm imagining the awkward conversations in the meeting when they were deciding on what glyphs to use. 😏

But I kinda love this idea! I'm just starting to get into Dolmenwood, & something I recently read mentions that one who levels into nobility (not born into a noble house) might or might not ever be fully accepted. These genetic characteristics could be a way Breggle sniff out the "nouveau riche."

Now that I think of it, how long has this narrative been out there? The first time I remember being called a paid protester by Right-wing Media was during Dubya's administration.

Right? I keep wondering when those fat Soros checks are going to drop. These bags of room-temperature cat vomit have been calling me a "paid protester" for *years,* and I've yet to see a single penny.

@stefanmilo.bsky.social Just watched your "bread loaf idol" video (excellent work, as usual ... thank you). Has anyone compared these to medieval "split tally sticks"? They were a fairly popular way of formalizing contracts by breaking a stick so that each party to the agreement could keep half.

This seems like a wonderful gesture. At least some 15 US scientists will be able to continue their work. It's not many, compared to the harm Trump is doing, but if more of this comes from other institutions it should mitigate some harm.

We've created a tracker that covers all executive orders affecting LGBTQ folks along with federal and state legislation. We're at 334 anti-LGBTQ bills. docs.google.com/spreadsheets... Credit @alli.gay @erininthemorning.com @evanurquhart.bsky.social @miralazine.bsky.social @lizsaila.bsky.social
A screenshot of a multi‐column table listing several U.S. presidential Executive Orders relating to LGBTQ+ rights and antidiscrimination policies. Each row has columns for “Origin” (POTUS), “Number/Identifier” (e.g., EO 13988), “Title” (such as Preventing and Combating Discrimination…), “Action Type” (e.g., Broad Nondiscrimination, Military Nondiscrimination), “Summary” (key points of each order), and “Date Signed.” The listed orders span from early 2021 through early 2025, covering topics like preventing discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation, banning conversion therapy, rescinding prior harmful EOs, and restricting or expanding DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives.A spreadsheet at the top shows columns tracking anti‐LGBTQ bills by status and year: total bills (334), 2025 bills (327), 2024 rollovers (7), how many passed committees (3), passed one chamber (5), passed both chambers (0), enacted (1), vetoed (0), failed (3), and carried forward (0). Below that, another header row lists different types of anti‐LGBTQ legislation (e.g., gender‐affirming care bans, pronoun bans, “Don’t Say Gay,” drag bans, bathroom bans) with the total count of each category (e.g., 55 for gender‐affirming care bans, 20 for pronoun bans, 14 for “Don’t Say Gay,” etc.). A color‐coded U.S. map spans the lower half, with states shaded from light orange to deep red according to how many anti‐LGBTQ bills they contain. Texas appears in the darkest red (46 bills), with lighter shades indicating fewer bills in other states. A note at the bottom right explains that the map shows total tracked bills per state, which does not necessarily reflect each bill’s likelihood of passage.

We've got to be ready to push back, HARD. The way I see it, our best path forward is to thrash them in 2026. Take the House. Take the Senate. Until then, no rest for any of them. Rs must be opposed and Ds must be flogged into action. If you're more progressive than your local Dems: Run. For. Office!

I'm with you, Peter. In 1979 I turned 13 & discovered DnD. At first, I would tell everyone I met all about it. That didn't last long, though. When the Great Panic™ began I started being careful who was around when I talked about it-especially teachers and parents, but also some other kids. Less fun.

Even before the Republicans take office, we're already starting to see TONS of this nonsense from all Trump's announced appointees. This is our reminder that they're going to hit us with an endless firehose of these things in hopes of overwhelming our institutions' ability to deal with them.

Oh, please! This has GOT to happen. Not only is this Olympic-level trolling, but removing his ability to pardon himself would mean that the precedent wouldn't be set. We'd still ... at the very least ... get to live in a country where no president has ever pardoned himself.

Also, just because I'm curious: Did you notice how the head was made to accommodate a turning tool (screw driver)? I can see a notch on the side but the angle of the photo doesn't show the top.

Ok! Thank you for the clarification. I guess that falls somewhere between "largely constructed using" and "single bespoke purpose." Something like "repeated bespoke purpose." 😄 Still interesting, though! Looking forward to learning more.

I want to emphasize that I'm not knowledgeable in this topic at all. These are just the thoughts that ran through my mind when I saw your post. In grad school I focused on medieval astronomy writing, if that gives you any idea about what quarter my curiosity comes from. 5/5

Trey Gorden @dendranthrope.bsky.social · 01/12/2024
But if the building in your picture were *largely* constructed using screws, wouldn't that suggest that someone was able to manufacture sufficient numbers of these things cheaply enough to make it practical? And that shank suggests that they'd be using it like we do: to draw two planks together. 4/

Trey Gorden @dendranthrope.bsky.social · 01/12/2024
A single wood screw being used for a bespoke purpose wouldn't, I suppose, be all that surprising, since screws have been around since classical antiquity (Archimedes, for example). 3/

Trey Gorden @dendranthrope.bsky.social · 01/12/2024
Nails have been around for a long time, of course, but I think that in the middle ages they had to be hand forged, and so they were expensive. 2/

Trey Gorden @dendranthrope.bsky.social · 01/12/2024
Sure. I'm less confused than surprised. My knowledge here is sharply limited, and I'm very much eager to be educated by you. I've always been under the impression that construction joinery was usually accomplished with joints (like mortise and tenon, for example) augmented by pegs/trennels. 1/

I'm very interested in this research. "Screw" technology isn't unheard-of in the middle ages. Medieval folks were using this technology to pump water, for armor attachments, and a host of other applications. But wood screws for construction? I haven't heard of that. Look at that shank! Looks modern!
