Even if you prioritise negotiation — at this juncture, given Putin's government spurns basic reciprocity, let alone good faith — how does it possibly fucking follow to weaken Ukraine's negotiating position?

I once thought coordination failures like the replication crisis or car dependent infrastructure would only worsen with time — the ingenuity of the many who apprehended these problems and began the difficult task of correction should inspire us even with so much undone!

"The Ypres Salient at Night" by Paul Nash depicts soldiers navigating the trench-riddled landscape of World War I under the ominous glow of flares and searchlights. Nash's dramatic use of light and shadow conveys the eerie and relentless environment faced by those on the front lines.

Ghost in the Shell (1995). Even more radiant on my last of countless viewings. The historicism of the opening establishes this time of transition and it's especially poignant and beautiful as in so perfect a genre work, we transcend genre and received categories of personhood and self. 📽️
Ceramic plates and polymer tendons glow spectral under the fluorescent light of a fabrication plant. The contours of a human form, yet unshelled and hanging from microactuators as though Noh masks.Against the glass and steel of the city, the silhouette of a woman sitting on bedding scarcely marked by use. She and all her apartment, negative space.

Do you see lack and difference or nascency? The gray ablation of rain. Rectilinear concrete in juttings and recesses give way to impenetrable corporate forms as if armoured against surveillance. Schoolchildren holding yellow umbrellas skip and follow along the edge of a filling waterway.Little remains through years of dereliction and flooding. Stone endures and so lasting is the chiseled relief of the tree of life whose apex is hominis. Eclipsing an abandoned car is a walking tank, a pale spider more than its designers and engineers.

My partner bought Sherma a scratching post and now to look at him — few creatures with consciousness have known such joy.
In the center of a township of soft forms and furnishing, rapture is manifest. Smiling in a manner seldom so legible among his kind, the wide jeweled eyes of a feline whose slitted pupils are rounded with joy.

Among his pleasures, a five pointed felt-star positioned so in the heavens by mere string.Come close and witness the same cropped — the face of elation itself.

The intrinsic pleasures of the stealth genre have pollinated design across the medium. Positioning and planning, the exquisite tension and the thrill that follows. Yet few still are dedicated to stealth. Some remarkably talented people now endeavour to right this and I urge all to support them.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope (2026). Two years since I last entered the Zone and there's much celebrate despite still betraying an obviously arduous development. The expansion is a welcome distillation and refinement, as captivating as the best of what was released. Still early.
The splendor of the withdrawing sun whose gradient — auric to light azure — casts over inestimable leaves and grasses on a plain and falls on an extensively modified 7.62x54mm rifle. Guarantor to this reprieve.Transmission towers for lost power lines. Oxidation has enshelled the metal into black husks warping where the corrosion flaked and reformed in the years of dereliction and this yet enduring through a world as though the remnants of a crematoria.Equipped for a landscape of radiation and war, a woman caresses the petals of a sunflower among many that blossom in a cavern darkness. A betrayal of their own form is sensed and so familiar are they as to now be wholly alien and in masquerade of nature.Power lines dissect the clouds of night. Their terminus over concrete and sarcophagus glows in a pale and spectral light. This tomb is vast over the spillway in which these forms dwell in a mirror darkly.

On release into Early Access this already could claim to have some of the finest enemy behaviour, combat flow and environmental reactivity of any FPS. In my judgement the best that's been released since Half-Life 2 (2004). Somehow it's still continually improving and expanding.

Was rereading Frost and almost fell to pieces thinking about my partner's adopted stray who so found himself a home.
A passage from The Death of the Hired Man (1914) by Robert Frost —

‘Home,’ he mocked gently.

       ‘Yes, what else but home?
It all depends on what you mean by home.
Of course he’s nothing to us, any more
Than was the hound that came a stranger to us
Out of the woods, worn out upon the trail.’

‘Home is the place where, when you have to go there,
They have to take you in.’

       ‘I should have called it
Something you somehow haven’t to deserve.’

All the Pretty Horses (1992).
"...The sky was dark and a cold wind ran through the bajada and in the dying light a cold blue cast had turned the doe’s eyes to but one thing more of things she lay among in that darkening landscape. Grass and blood. Blood and stone. Stone and the dark medallions that the first flat drops of rain caused upon them. He remembered Alejandra and the sadness he’d first seen in the slope of her shoulders which he’d presumed to understand and of which he knew nothing and he felt a loneliness he’d not known since he was a child and he felt wholly alien to the world although he loved it still. He thought that in the beauty of the world were hid a secret. He thought the world’s heart beat at some terrible cost and that the world’s pain and its beauty moved in a relationship of diverging equity and that in this headlong deficit the blood of multitudes might ultimately be exacted for the vision of a single flower."

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster (2025). One of the greatest games ever made receives a definitive remaster, meticulous and faithful to a level that is utterly remarkable. I can't recommend this more to existing devotees or those merely curious alike.
Imposed against the light-scar of the world in shadow, a lithe face of printed circuitry and metal. A green incandescence flows through the tributaries of these paths like painted lines signifying a deity on an ancient wall. Her face is hatred and superiority. Brutalist arches of concrete curve over to occlude a sky of orange clouds. An imperious banner reads "UNN" under supine hands — an entrance beneath. Neon signs turn and some garbage vehicle idles in the distance. An urban street never rebuilt but retrofitted to sclerosis.Angular and arching, the metal interior of a station in orbit. Filling the windows of this view is the majesty of the Earth, the thin and permeable atmosphere and its glowing displacement from the topology beneath; within clouds swirl across continents.A handgun is raised into the darkness. Individual lights produce archipelagoes of awareness and the glow of consoles and terminals sketch the borders of this shadowy reception area. No place is safe.

Patlabor 2: The Movie (1993). An underrated film exactingly architected from my aesthetic tastes. 📽️
A mech whose white chassis gleamed vibrant in the light of day has been scorched and dented by an onslaught of weaponry and collisions, its covering in tatters. It seems to bow before its subjects, inestimable seagulls in a junkyard on a distant shore.Seated in the dark innards of a mech, a pilot articulates their gloved fingers as though holding a globe in their hand. All near submerged in a teal light.Surveillance footage from an unseen aircraft or satellite. Urban atherosclerosis, cars and trucks halted on the graceful curve of an on-ramp.Over centuries the humidity of the jungle darkened the sandstone of the ruins, beveling the edges of block upon block that culminates in an ageless visage embraced by overgrown roots. All towering to eclipse the upward gaze of a wounded man.

A vital apparatus in frontier weapons development. #GameDev
Clinical and industrial at once, an apparatus painted a pale and medical green whose cylinders form almost an inverted ziggurat — the microfluidics and biomass reactors within can decompose and extrude a torso. Without sentience nor ensouled. Warnings and inspection stickers plaster facets of the machine.

The frontier of ballistic weapon design requires modelling with a functioning circulatory system.A closer view revealing a matrix of pressurized drains and illuminated sensors that are in function the eyes of this apparatus. Fabricating the red torso absent limbs beyond the elbow.

Ida (2013). This is one of those rare films whose every shot is a triumph of photography. Despite its brevity, there's a universe of tragedy here about which I spoke to my father regarding the duty of memory in Poland — the horrendous crimes, the unforgivable collaborations. A masterpiece. 📽️
Tears melt down the serene countenance of a young nun among those in darker cloth who've vowed their lives to sacrifice. Scarcely framed are these tears against the unadorned stone of the convent walls.Snow found little purchase in the curve of the crater in which several novitiates have raised a statue of Christ. All with their eyes upturned. The young novitiate in her gray garb and veil walks downcast past buildings whose exterior resembles burnt wax. Nearby a solitary bicycle, the only indicator of occupancy.A man of middle in an earthen cell. The walls of black soil rise close and irregular around his kneeling form and in his blackened hands he clutches cloth saturated with the same. His face is nothing but abject shame with his eyes invisible but to stare at that which was beneath him.

Halo. People praise The Silent Cartographer as an excellent level because *one-half* of it isn't a duplicated room or bridge, moving through even a trimmed iteration of these spaces in the remake was rough existentially and Jaime Griesemer's "30 seconds of fun" itself isn't so repeatable.

Profondo Rosso (1975). My favourite of the Argento films I've seen — some moments strike as well directed and brilliant as anything in the genre, others quite tedious. 📽️
Water glints like a knife's edge down the chin of a woman. Her eyes in a distressed concentration as though she alone had witnessed violence incommunicable to others, her hand raised as if to bring it into the world.Column shadows streak darkly over the alley, marble and concrete and cobblestone appearing from the night as elemental forms stark in this light. Disconnected is the yellow of a taxi, in appearance hovering. The silhouette of a young woman's face lit by the moon. All else has fallen away but the flames and inferno bokeh-daubed behind. In the blood-webbed sclera, the iris falls away like sewage drain. Black oil is the eyeliner.

Titled "Lake with Cypress" and was created by French artist Camille Bombois (1883-1970).
This oil-on-canvas painting captures a serene, sun-drenched river or lake flanked by towering cypress and deciduous trees, rendered with rich textures and delicate brushwork characteristic of French artist Camille Bombois. The composition draws the eye down a shimmering water channel where the soft afternoon light reflects across the ripples and lily pads, creating a tranquil, luminous atmosphere. In the distant background, hazy blue hills and hints of a small hillside structure evoke the peaceful, idyllic countryside of a classic European landscape.
