Everybody talks about how nothing is affordable anymore but no one talks about how poorly made and disposable things are. Part of the affordability crisis is because we keep repurchasing things, cars, appliances, clothes etc because things don’t last.

Today @dairinstitute.bsky.social is releasing the Luddite Lab Resource Hub. The hub hosts case studies, resources, and political education for unions, labor organizations, and workers who want to fight “AI” and automation at work. labor.dair-institute.org
Screenshot of the Luddite Lab website. The word Luddite Lab is in the top left corner. The tables in the top read: Case Studies, Primers, Resource Library, Contact Us, and About. The text below reads: “The Luddite Lab Resource Hub provides resources for unions, labor organizations, and worker-organizers fighting AI and automation at work. The lab provides strategies for worker-led governance and oversight of new technology through case studies, primers, and a resource library.” Below, there are five cards: Case Studies (Stories from worker organizers resisting AI), Primers (Applied research insights into AI, automation, and the future of work), Resource Library (Additional resources from partners), Contact Us (Ways to connect with the Luddite Lab team), and About (About the Luddite Lab project and team)

grading my electronics students midterm synth projects is so funny because my comments are essentially communicating “this part was cool” and “that part wouldve been cooler if…” using somewhat technical language. and then at the end i write that i took points off for not soldering lol

Here are some texts I got from an immigration lawyer friend of mine. Shared with permission. Some of the bleakest shit I’ve ever heard.
Text reading: I had to come down to Los Angeles for Work and ended up trying to help with the raid last night. As a Bernie usefully. Waited by the entrance for detainees
We were repeatedly denied access of any kind, and eventually LAPD force removed attorneys ice. Also tear gassed a baby under age two. Today they told us to come back at eight to see the clients, but they ever refused entry to us as well as politicians, including Jimmy, Gomez, and right now. They’re releasing some kind of gas, so the Attorneys can’t breatheText reading: Post it so everyone knows. When we were trying to chant their rights ice honked so no one could hear.

Yet another example of how “automation” just yields a seemingly paradoxical mix of “responsibilization” and “depersonalization”: you get to wrestle with shitty software and raw data all on your own, with minimal (if any) support from other humans, with their institutional knowledge, wisdom + care

"What if the ambition @ the ❤️ of communications technology was not to steer our systems away from noise, but to respond to perturbations + disturbances with something like curiosity? How might our relationship to noise — as an antidote to our rush to “solve” + “settle” — become a signal itself?"

I’d forgotten this detail, but then it was 9 years ago :/
At the station next to me, a slender matte-black robot arm twitches, snapping video chips into the motherboards. It is relentless, undistracted, untiring. Given half a chance Foxconn would replace us all, but then they'd lose all those special benefits the President promised them for coming here in the first place. The to year exemption on income and sales tax. The exemption on import tariffs for components. The exemptions from minimum wages. The exemption on labor rights. The protection against any form of legal action from employees or inmates. The exemption from environmental protection legislation. And Apple? Well, without me standing here, clipping one Chinese-made component into another Chinese-made component, Apple loses the right for a robot in Shenzhen to laser engrave
'Made in the USA by the Great American Worker' into every iPhone casing before they're shipped over here.
