On a cycling holiday. Day 1: 37.5km, day 2: 53.5km, day 3: 70km. Seriously considering punching through to 95km tomorrow cause Wednesday’s weather looks damp. Let’s see how this goes.

I didn’t check for 3-eyed fish but if there are any here, they would obviously say Bonjour.

TIL French for cul-de-sac is not that same term as you might expect. It’s impasse.

So I thought the booking websites always just said positive things. Apparently not. I’m not sure what The Love Room is, but for €87 it’s not exactly priced by the hour.
Map search showing bad ratings.

Easy as that. Cause it’s all click bait crap from them.

And of course in amongst the many beach scenes, that icon The Sunbaker… & Dupain’s weary, frustrated comment!

Bountiful exhibition at #nswstatelibrary on master Australian photographer #maxdupain. Deservedly popular. Covers Dupain’s amazing output & range - landscape, figures, everyday scenes in the changing city, & some of the best C20th architecture. Covers Utzon, Seidler, Murcutt, Andrews, Buhrich 1/2

The French all have such fashionable glasses; models that seemingly never make it to the anglosphere. (I had thought the same last time I was here, and that they’d appear for us eventually. Nah, they didn’t)

To take an Uber to the conference centre is about 40 minutes drive. It’s £22 direct. I could also walk 15 mins, take a train most of the way for £7 but then the the last bit is still £12. So take the car the whole way and be done with it. Still cheaper than a Canberra airport taxi to our house.

I see many card and platform payment systems that have quietly changed the terminology so it’s not a payment surcharge anymore but something else, that is precisely still the same thing. I guess I’ll just keep using cash to save money (and be annoying).

Body corporate committees are where sense goes to die. Unit manager asks what we need repainted. I find the quote for the last paint job that happened in 2010 as a guide. Doofus committee member responds asking if this quote includes the balconies. Yes it did, they were repainted 16 years ago.

This airport sandwich contains bread (6 lines), tomato, mayonnaise (3 lines), bacon (2 lines), lettuce. Seems excessive for 5 different items.
Lengthy list of ingredients in a sandwich.

Google finally updated some of its satellite images of Gaza and my god, it's horrific. The entirety of Rafah has been demolished. The majority of Khan Younis is in ruins. Entire towns completely leveled and erased of the map.

I for one am glad to read the Bogong Moths are having a good year. There’s been swarms of birds flying over Parliament House every night lately munching on the ones drawn to the lights. Also who can forget this moment? (people under about ~30 excused) www.theguardian.com/science/2026...

Intercultural differences. Far lift door opens, as I get to it I can then see there’s an American coming out. I do a sidestep as we negotiate who’s going which way. She says ‘excuse me’ which to me comes across as rude, whereas we’d say ‘oops sorry’. But that’s just what they say?

Finally getting around to deleting everything on the bad site. Jeez I shouldn’t be surprised but they don’t make it easy yet there are so many fee for service grifting options.

For several brief moments last week looking after my (sperm donor) kids, I appreciated how procreation could be a thing that people actively seek to do. Anyway then it went back to regular ‘all care no legal responsibility’ status and I took a plane 17,500km away.

Just heard a Harvey Norman radio ad in a shop in Dublin. It had the same familiar Australian voice actor as at home, except the deals were in euros. (The lengthy terms and conditions were ready by an Irish voice)

I think this is old news, but the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank says it’s actually cheaper for them to do transactions by card payment than cash yet the card payment comes with the fee. I’m so glad the fees are being banned.

Arriving in Ireland for the first time, realising I know nothing about it beyond the basics, mostly from tropes and stereotypes. Like aside from drinking Guinness, bad weather, Father Ted, surviving English colonisation, potatoes and eating Guinness pie…what’s it about? Only one way to find out!

Transiting through Singapore. Shortly before landing they read the mandatory arrival information. I’ve never heard a warning of death penalty for drug trafficking being read so chirpily like the Qantas gay did.

Hanging out at the Service NSW because you can no longer do the transaction I need online (yes, they really did that). Reminds me of the ticket line and huge wait in an Italian post office except the Italians were more efficient.

At the stage of life where I wake up on a weekend and think ‘gee, the world isn’t great and my elected representatives aren’t helping. I should write and tell them what I think.’ (Today’s missive was about choosing the right side of history for when the Palestine Nuremberg trials eventually come).

Neices are playing ‘school’, the one who was teacher has come to complain to dad that the cousin wasn’t paying attention and was writing about something else. Dad points out that’s a realistic experience so enjoy teaching, just ask your mother.

I saw a video this week of someone travelling in Argentina and he referred to meals out costing hundreds of thousands of pesos if not millions for a larger group. Didnt seem right. Ok wow they had inflation, checking back in 2009 airport taxi cost 120 pesos now it’s 38,000. That’s some inflation.

Boomer brain moments from dad this week (radicalised by Facebook and Sky news): thinks governments selling off assets is a left wing agenda. Was not willing to accept actually quite the opposite, Thatcher, Reagan etc. Choosing to ensure the free education from Gough Whitlam is worth what he paid.

Idea: if Penny Wong says something like Ed Milliband did, the embassy will probably close up shop and she won’t have to kick out the ambassador (although she should) over them killing Zomi Francombe. It’ll make a change from him being in the Parliament House members dining room unaccompanied tho.
