Wow! Dems should tell people about stuff like that! Like, over and over and over. I'm a political hobbyist like most people on this site and I couldn't remember that happening.

What are some big wins Dems delivered for unions during Biden's term? Big wins for unions that Dems really advertised so the public would know it was Dems that delivered?

Yeah, but Trump did those crimes (Jan 6) in plain view of the world. Everyone was already well aware of the very graphic facts nearly 6 years ago.

Run a ~1/8" thick nylon string > 2x the length of the tube through it, tie a tube-diameter sized knot in the middle (or tie a little pad) of the string, get some soapy water in the tube, then pull the string to scrub the tube. Then wash the tube and string. It's quick and effective.

I'm in a pretty economically shat upon cohort (graduated from undergrad in 2010) and I've been watching it all burn since 2016. I'm tired of watching Dems clean up messes before the people let repubs loot the government and make more forever wars and pandemics while destroying our economic future.

Yeah, if you think the Dem is worse for you than the Republican in their race, by all means help the Republican win and gain power to implement their LGBT-impacting policies.

Yeah, he's aligned with the goal and in one of the most progressive voting bases in the country, and he's still being economical with his political capital on trans issues far more important than sports. He's doing great work showing how to govern. www.erininthemorning.com/p/mamdanis-n...

There is a trade. There are only so many hours in a day and politicians have to pick what they work on. Zohran Mamdani is out there spending his time making the NYC government function for the people, and people feel it. And I'm sure he's quietly doing the politically expensive good things, too.

Would you say Google (or being able to easily search through the information on the Internet) changed the nature of humanity? AI is a similar jump in functionality of information storage systems, now with far more ability to synthesize information for far broader search prompts.

Science is harmed by starving scientists of funding, but it is not going to be remotely harmed by that edit. If a scientist finds something interesting and novel, they're not going to suppress it.

idk, they've managed to look at Miss Teen USA owning Trump being super close with Jeffrey Epstein for decades, releasing Ghislaine to club fed, being in the Epstein files extensively, and starting the Iran war to change the subject, and his people still manage to mentally block out the obvious.

So, what factors are correlated with peoples' impressions of the economy? I assume prices they remember are part of it, as well as perceived ease of increasing their wage (via job change or promotion) or of improving housing. Is there a good metric for mobility factors like these?

I don't think I know anyone who would spear another person in the throat (assuming spear means "stab with a pointy stick"). That is a weird behavior to expect from anyone.

It probably is true that really throttling new supply drives up the value of their homes faster, and I get that cities are funded by property taxes so the city govt is very responsive to property owners, but it's such a drag on the quality of life in the city (via housing costs and homelessness).

Well, the land is worth a ton now, so people who already got in can cash out selling the land to builders who could bring down housing costs like in Austin, and then stretch their retirement fund longer in cheaper housing. It seems more like they fight to keep new people out of their neighborhoods.

Hmm, except for 4 months at McDonalds, every job I've had since undergrad (ie since 2010) has had a 401k or other retirement plan. That includes a $13/hr factory job and a warehouse job. These are all compounding into some real money already. I'd be able to save even more if housing was cheaper.

Does AIPAC represent all Jewish Americans or just a specific set of policies and candidates that many Democrats (including many Jewish Americans) don't subscribe to anymore?

Matt @deeply-stated.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
If supply was keeping pace with demand, why shouldn't homes depreciate? Time and the elements are continually wearing down the home and its systems, so if builders could make supply meet demand, how could homes not become an operational expense instead of an investment asset?

Sure, that's what people want and candidates should campaign on that. And if they win, Dems should put in leadership that will pursue that. But, we know how they wanted to handle Mike Pence and Epstein when Trump felt real danger. And Trump and co have done far more terrible things this term.

Trump ran hard in 2024 because he would likely have been sentenced to jail time in his criminal cases. Yeah we need fighters after the midterms, but it would be very beneficial for us all for Trump and co to think they're safe.

That seems a bit unnecessary on ICE agents' parts. No one is prosecuting ICE agents for many years, and identifying the ICE agents in a car from a plate number (even with a time-stamp) strongly enough for court seems really unlikely. But in any case, it shows an intent to obstruct investigations.
000
Matt @deeply-stated.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
Flock is far from the only name in the license plate location collection game. For example, insurance companies want to estimate how much cars actually drive/find stolen cars, so there are scores of people with many ALPR cameras on their car that record all the LPs they see and sell that data.
020
Matt @deeply-stated.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
A database table of timestamped license plate captures from a network of cameras could be used to track a license plate (or at least show the plate was in front of those cameras at the indicated times). But again, you couldn't take that to court to show a specific person was driving without more.
100
Matt @deeply-stated.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
Less pedantically, flock cameras identify license plate numbers. That's a strong lead on the ID of the driver, but it's not an identification. This matters because violent criminals often change (w a stolen one) or remove their plate before committing a violent crime. Ex: youtu.be/JgoA1KiUPME?...

Yeah, the cameras can't identify people, that would require that the camera could capture high res facial images and then off-camera software would have to look up the identity of the person with that face in a separate off-camera database. It's true that their cameras can't track or ID people.

Academia is loaded with fabulists and academic fraud is widespread by researchers irrespective of race. Funds and prestige flow to researchers who manage to publish incredible claims in big journals. Unfortunately the public only cares about academic fraud when it has other political valences.

Does that make sense? I thought Callais raised the standard for plaintiffs to require proof of intentional racial discrimination, so analysis showing racial cracking/packing is non-justiciable as long as the crackers/packers don't explicitly say they were intentionally discriminating on race. No?

How is it possible that no one was covering Natalie until this book came out? How are we just learning about her nearly 2 years into this administration?
000
Matt @deeply-stated.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Oh! Hasn't she been an acting Senator for like a month now? How has she not been briefed on Taiwan (which is crucial to a large chunk of our economy right now)?

It's kind of nuts that we haven't heard of Natalie before now. Like, are journalists not getting anywhere near Trump this time around?

I listened to most of Haberman/Snow's Regime Change yesterday, and this Natalie Harp focus was coming no matter what. The book references this weird character constantly.

I can't think of any useful technologies that can't be abused to effect great harm. I'm glad there are some controls on ALPR searches, but I guess I don't really feel I'm entitled to not be seen or remembered while I'm in public. I think the bad thing is the stalking more than the tech.

Matt @deeply-stated.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
I listened to most of Regime Change (Haberman, Snow) today, and they bring up Natalie Harp every other chapter, noting how she's doing slavishly devoted things for Trump. The book really invites the reader to ask "who is this bizarre person I've never heard of shaping Trump's info diet?"
020
Matt @deeply-stated.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
I'm confused. Where does Ossoff say anything scandalous about Natalie? I only see that he says she travels with Trump, which seems like an objective fact.

It's hard to actually assess someone's ability based on their work; you have to be an expert in that field and put in the effort. Society has built a number of proxies for ability (eg awards, titles, schools) so that a resume or CV can just be a list of proxy measures.

These gloves sound like they'll be more of a footgun that backfires on the user. They'll need an external, wired battery pack to work for more than one Tazer-equivalent use, and that wiring would be a real tactical disadvantage. This sounds like another grift product.
