Good grief. The neighborhood overloads are at our front door, despite the No Soliciting sign.
An adult wild turkey is standing at a front door facing towards the steps. One of its poults is lying down on the porch.

Nice mule deer buck a block from us. Here’s my regular reminder for those of you with ornamental yew shrubs and trees in your front yards: just a few bites of one will kill this guy idfg.idaho.gov/conservation.... Please consider removing or replacing them.
A blurry photo of a deer’s head as it was running past a Halloween skeleton holding a bottle in a raised habd like a weapon. She’s wearing a red blouse and black skirt, and has black hair. Between her and the buck is a sign telling Idahoans to vote yes on a bill to return reproductive decisions to Idaho citizens and their doctors.

So many birds moving through our yard right now! Robins, juncos, LOTS of tanagers, nuthatches, yellow-rumped warblers, flickers, chickadees, and two Anna's hummingbirds. I love seeing mixed feeding flocks.
A woodpecker called a Northern Flickers is tossing a berry from a Virginia creeper plant growing on a chain link fence into its mouth. The bird has a brown back with black barring, a pale pink chest with black spots, a black bib, a gray head with a long beak, and a pale brown cap.

One of the East Group Tors at Granite Tors in the Chena River State Recreation Area. Taken a couple of weeks ago, when the autumn foliage in the tundra was near peak. Story and more photos in my Field Notes Substack: lwpetersen.substack.com/p/impromptu-... #alaska #hiking #fallfoliage
A group of tall, jagged granite tors rises from a slope of autumn tundra. The weathered gray rock forms angular spires and fins, stacked and fractured, the tallest leaning like blades against a gray, cloud-heavy sky. Green spruce trees of varying heights grow among and in front of the rock. The foreground tundra is a dense patchwork of red, orange, and gold low brush, with a few small spruce scattered across it. Distant hills fade into haze on the lower left.

Alerts from NWS Fairbanks AK (UNOFFICIAL) @fai.nws-bot.us · 14/09/2026
🚨 Flood Watch issued September 14 at 2:18PM AKDT until September 18 at 4:00PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK 🚨 Additional Details Here.
* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be
possible.

* WHERE...Including the following areas, Upper Kuskokwim Valley. This
includes the cities of McGrath, Nikolai, And Takotna.

* WHEN...Through Friday afternoon.

* IMPACTS...The Kuskokwim River is currently at bankfull. Soils
remain moist and excessive runoff may result in localized flooding
of rivers, creeks, streams, other low-lying areas and flood-prone
locations.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- Heavy rain is forecasted to begin Monday afternoon. Rain should
continue through Wednesday morning with storm total rainfall
expected to be around 1 to 2 inches. Minor pooling/ponding of
water in low-lying and flood prone areas is possible with the
already saturated ground conditions beginning on Tuesday. Small
stream and creek flooding is possible as we expect very high
water levels throughout the week in response to the heavy rain.

- The Kuskokwim River dropped below bankfull Monday morning.
River levels are expected to rise again in response to the heavy
rain beginning Monday afternoon and remain high through the rest
of the week.

- We will continue to monitor the situation closely and update as
necessary.

- For more updated river information, please refer to
water.noaa.gov or weather.gov/aprfc* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be
possible.

* WHERE...Including the following areas, Fairbanks, North Pole, Two
Rivers, Fort Wainwright, Ester, Fox and Chena Hot Springs Road From
Mp 12 To Mp 34.

* WHEN...From Tuesday afternoon through Saturday afternoon.

* IMPACTS...Heavy rain may result in minor flooding of rivers,
creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- The Chena River is running higher than normal and will continue
to be high through the week. More rain is expected beginning
Tuesday and will continue through Wednesday afternoon. Storm
total rainfall during this time will be around 0.50" to 1.00". It
has been very wet lately and this amount of rain has the
potential to bring the Chena and Little Chena Rivers above minor
flood stage beginning Wednesday.

- This means low-lying and typical flood-prone areas may
experience areas of flooding from Wednesday through the end of
the week as water levels gradually rise then fall. In addition,
while we are not expecting much flooding away from rivers,
streams and creeks, as the ground is already saturated and may
struggle to hold more water. This can lead to pooling and ponding
of water across the area which may make travel difficult in
localized spots.

- There is some uncertainty with exact timing and amounts of
rainfall but as details become clearer, we will continue to
update.

- For more updated river information, please refer to
water.noaa.gov or weather.gov/aprfc

The American Kestrel—North America's smallest falcon—is famous for its ability to "wind-hover". By angling its body into the wind, rapidly flapping its wings, and making subtle tail adjustments, the bird stays completely stationary in midair to spot and ambush prey like insects and small rodents.
