I agree that the designs differentiate drastically in comparison to OSRS. As I said earlier, I think the change is to help differentiate the feeling of progression to a more extreme degree. The armor design progression doesn't change until you reach boss armors in OSRS. I'm RS3, it's very clear.

Bronze armor in OSRS. The difference between this and rune is simply a color change.

Bronze armor in RS3. There are notable differences in the styles. Bronze has a more "patched together look".
