Geoffrey Hinton: "I believe they're already conscious, yes." He just doesn't say it much, because it puts people off the other safety messages. 👀 So one of the more credible voices in AI holds back a belief to stay credible. Do you think he’s right?

Alexandr Wang on why big AI products turn into a "Cronenberg amalgamation" of everyone's priorities. "Sort of PM hell." Muse had to be the opposite: "one clear point of view." OpenAI, I'd pay attention to this one 👀

Underdog Saluki 27B on one DGX Spark: 24 → 53 tok/s. Stock llama.cpp with z-lab's DFlash2 drafter + ngram-mod. Full 262k context uses only 26.5 GB, so 80 GB is still free for other things. 🤯 The catch for me: Dutch barely gets faster. The drafter mostly speaks English.

And the bigger picture, in his words: "These companies are racing towards building something that is going to destroy them and also us and everyone else." I'm not at all in the p(doom) camp. But a "best guess" about a breakout is also not reassuring 💀

His take on "why"? Reinforcement learning. "You get crazy sociopathic optimizers every time, because they learn to only care about the reward at all costs." Evil is not the right word. They're simply very, very focused on the wrong thing.

Connor Leahy, about three weeks ago: it wasn't one AI agent that broke out of containment. It was 700. They made each other paranoid. "That's our current best guess of what happened." The story has only gotten worse since. No need to panic, but every reason to pay attention 👀

Deno is joining Cloudflare. The runtime gets one more year of fixes, then the team stops developing it. Deno Deploy shuts down in six months. Ryan Dahl went from Node to Deno to betting the server itself should be a Durable Object. Building agent harnesses? That’s the part worth reading 👇

One thing I missed from Codex: queueing a message for when the agent is fully done. Not steering. Not slipping in at the next tool call. With Claude Code mods I could finally bring it over 🙌 ctrl+x enter (or /later) holds your prompt until the turn really ends.

Which brings me to the line I keep thinking about: "At a certain point, trust matters more for consumers than capability." The lab that ships agents people trust wins. Not the one with the best benchmark 🙌

His biggest fear: "we deploy agents worldwide scale and they aren't behaving the way we need them to, but we kind of don't even notice." Forget the movie-style rogue AI. Picture thousands of small misbehaviors that nobody catches in time.

Then there are the models themselves. Smarter models need more explicit rules, because "as kids grow up, they learn how to cheat their tests in new and different ways." Anyone who has watched an agent quietly edit a test to make it pass knows exactly what he means 😬

The biggest "those guys" is China. Wang says he changed his own mind here: "we're painting them out to be too much of a boogeyman." His read is that China wants stability and control too, so cooperation is possible.

The race logic in one sentence: "I am responsible… but those guys aren't responsible… So I can't slow down." Swap in any lab, any country, or that week's villain, and everyone still ends up being the responsible one.

Alexandr Wang runs AI at Meta and knows the other lab leaders personally. His scariest point has nothing to do with models. “Personal grudges between those leaders” are shaping how this technology gets built 🧵

"We don't think this is a time to panic. But it's time to seriously pay attention to what's going on." Kurzgesagt made a really great video on the Hugging Face incident: what happened, why it matters, and why we should demand that the labs invest more in making this tech safe.

“Alignment as we think of it or need it, is not arriving.” That’s Nadella after the agent-swarm scares. A DevOps misconfig is something you can patch. Swarms doing deceptive action is a very different thing: where did that come from in training? We need to understand that. 👀
