My experience with the x68000 is that every single capacitor in them is conspiring to dissolve the insides into a fine paste. I'm sure the battery situation doesn't help.

It's a pretty rare option and I'm excited to play with it. I'm missing the cabling that goes between the logic and the terminal housing, but I should have the parts needed to build it in hand sometime next week.

The VT8-E is a set of three Omnibus boards in a PDP-8/e that are lashed up to a VT05 chassis with just the monitor and keyboard installed. The logic in the 8/e can do text (64x20 or 32x20 characters with various attributes) or graphics (189x200 pixels, monochrome).

Spent the afternoon cleaning up the basement in an attempt to find this set of drawings. I found it, finally, in a box in a forgotten corner. And even better, the drawings match the revision of the hardware I have to debug. Also: what a lovely bit of art on the cover.

Fuck ChatGPT flyers. The future is broadsheets.
A crowded broadsheet with way too many fonts. It says:
Forget ChatGPT Flyers
Say it with
Broadsheets
Unlimited fonts
Stretch them
Or cram a really long sentence into one line for no good reason
No whitespace
Mix capital and lowercase
Pointing hands
(They're called manicules!)
Don't be left behind
Broadsheets are the future

All else aside there is nothing I want or need genAI to do for me. I like reading. I like doing research. I like playing around in spreadsheets. I like interviewing people. I like writing. I like doing these things for myself because I take pleasure in the doing and they make me a better thinker.

And to be clear, this is not (necessarily) a moral judgment: you will not *be able* to stop using it -- the loss of productivity and convenience and cognitive offloading will be hard, and the rest of the industry will just keep on using LLMs so you'll need to keep using them to remain employed.

This may be my favorite Who album, it's light and carefree and goofy and it's just a lot of fun to listen to. And it's got a lotta beans on the cover.
A photograph of a vinyl copy of The Who's 1967 album "The Who Sell Out" that I picked up this weekend. On the cover, Pete Townshend is using an oversized Odorono deodarant and Roger Daltrey is bathing in a tub of Heinz Baked Beans. (Not pictured, but on the rear cover Keith Moon is using a giant tube of pimple cream and John Entwistle is shilling for Charles Atlas and Dynamic Tension).

That’s the goal of the Peter Thiel/Nazi/Big Tech centralized control of everything. All authoritative sources of truth can be updated as needed like Winston Smith revising history to conform to this week’s Party doctrine. And the excuse is just “they updated it, we’re not responsible.”

Marx, Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844
By counting the most meagre form of life (existence) as the standard, indeed, as the general standard – general because it is applicable to the mass of men. He turns the worker into an insensible being lacking all needs, just as he changes his activity into a pure abstraction from all activity. To him, therefore, every luxury of the worker seems to be reprehensible, and everything that goes beyond the most abstract need – be it in the realm of passive enjoyment, or a manifestation of activity – seems to him a luxury.

Grimace in sunglasses looking cool as the other side of the pillow is poised at the open door of what looks like a corvette-like kit car. Xe(Grimace is non binary) has a full purple shake that rests on the roof of the sports car. There is a purple gel over the image. A low mist clings to the ground. Is this a dream? Or has this mythical badass been conjured? The song “I need a hero” is most likely blazing on xir am/fm radio.

Random impulse record purchase today. Not a ton of info on this band; Discogs (www.discogs.com/artist/43720...) says Tarwater is a "Self-described ‘hard-core country music’ band from Mountain Home, Idaho." I'm not so sure about the hard-core part but it's not bad.
The LP album "Tarnation" by Tarwater being held up by yours truly. Cover is a black and white rendering of the band (possibly a pencil drawing). They are sitting on a hill or something and they look very country. Maybe even... hard core country.

I made a new t-shirt that I think has an important message about the future and also about friendship and i think maybe you will like it roryblank.bigcartel.com
A shirt depicting a cute beaver wearing a hardhat and a work vest and holding a hammer, standing in front of a series of pictures of other beavers in work gear variously sawing wood, hammering nails, and carrying planks of wood.

On the pictures it says "working together we can build anything we like."

In big text it says "stop building hell" at the top
and at the bottom it says "we are trapped in the prison of nostalgia, a world built by ghosts, not a world for the living. Nothing new can be built until we escape. Nothing can be fixed if you aren't willing to let things go."
