Even though Saturn is 1.26 billion kms from Earth, this beautiful planet was as close to Earth as it gets this year making it appear big and bright. This is called opposition, which happened last night (October 4th). I used my 16 inch telescope. #astrophotography #astronomy #saturn
Planet Saturn at opposition on October 4, 2026. Rings are brighter than usual because they are reflecting the Sun's light while at opposition. Taken with a 16 inch telescope.

In case, you are wondering, this is an HDR image. I took 2 photos one right after the other. One showing the Moon's surface details and very dark background, the other longer exposure with the clouds and the Moon was saturated/white. Then blended them together.

Feeling very lucky to have clear skies and northern lights while in Iceland. Taken on September 8, 2026 near Vestrahorn Mountain. I love how the shadows and streaks in the sky resemble a mountain. #astrophotography #astronomy #northernlights

The southern Milky Way as seen from Namibia, Africa. I used a 35mm lens to show the part of the Milky Way that we never see in the northern hemisphere because, well, the Earth is in the way. Incredible detail of star birth regions, (pink) and dark dust lanes. #astrophotography #astronomy #milkyway
The southern Milky Way as seen from Namibia, Africa. I used a 35mm lens to show the part of the Milky Way that we never see in the northern hemisphere because, well, the Earth is in the way. I have been to the southern hemisphere many times and I think the clarity of the night sky in Namibia is the best in the world. Incredible detail of star birth regions, (pink) and dark dust lanes that block the light of billions of stars behind pop through the steady atmosphere. The bright yellow star, lower left, is Alpha Centauri, the closest star system to us.

The core is usually close to the horizon in the north. We can't see most of the right side of the Milky Way here in BC, Canada.

When in the southern hemisphere at certain times of the year, we can see the whole shape of the Milky Way galaxy across the entire sky. The bright central core where the stars are most concentrated is right overhead. From Namibia, Africa using an 8mm fish eye lens. #astrophotography #astronomy

Sunspots through smoke. Wildfire smoke from the Pacific Northwest has created a dense smokey atmosphere here in British Columbia. The smoke acts like a solar filter. I used a 1000mm Nikkor mirror lens with no filter to catch the surface of the Sun. #astrophotography #astronomy
