Our last butterfly transect survey of the year at Horseshoe Plantation/ Belle Toute this afternoon. A total of six species and 30 individuals seen. Biggest surprise was seeing a Chalkhill blue, seems quite late in the season for it.

Had a great day at Dungerness RSPB reserve today - 48 species of birds seen/ heard including the White- winged black tern, 5 Little gulls, Ruff, Avocet and Marsh harrier. Also saw my first ever Grey Bush- cricket. A national scarcity, but reasonably common here apparently.

Lovely to do a guided walk this morning for some of my fellow @southdownsnp.bsky.social volunteers. We looked at the importance of chalk grassland, it's management and some typical species we see at this time of year. Everyone loved the Autumn lady's- tresses!

14 species of butterflies on the Horseshoe / Belle Toute transect today. Quite a few Adonis Blues and Silver spotted skippers and 2 Clouded yellows were the hilights plus the heather is flowering on the rare chalk heath!

Did some moth trapping in the garden last night. 25 species recorded including several Jersey Tigers. The best was a Portland Ribbon wave, which apparently is becoming more common along the Sussex coast.

This is sad news. I loved the madcap humour of Goodies as a child. Bills nature TV programmes were ground breaking and helped get UK wildlife programmes back in the mainstream. Bill presented me with my Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award when he gave a talk at an RSPB local meeting. RIP Bill Oddie

Spent a hugely inspiring morning hearing about the work of the Wildflower Conservation Society based in Brighton. We learnt about seed collection, cleaning and storage then went to collect some seed from a local meadow.
