NIFC's latest: 8.54 million acres burned this year, 146% of the 10-year average, with 50 uncontained large fires. The U.S. spent 49 straight days at Preparedness Level 5 (Jul 18 to Sept 4). Fire closes roads faster than map apps update.

Ready.gov's 1 gallon per person per day covers drinking and basic hygiene. It's a floor. If you want to flush or wash dishes, store more.

Handwashing has the highest return of any habit here. Soap for 20 seconds, or 60%+ sanitizer. After the toilet, before food, every time. Keep sanitizer at both spots.

Emergency toilet: 5-gallon bucket, heavy trash bag liner, a scoop of kitty litter or sawdust after each use. Double-bag, seal, store in a lidded bin outdoors. Check local guidance for disposal.

The second wave in a long outage is sanitation. When pressure drops, toilets stop flushing and handwashing slips. Stomach illness follows within days.

What's the most annoying thing you couldn't do during a water outage or boil advisory, the thing you didn't think of until it happened?

Boil advisory rules for everything that isn't drinking: - Teeth, ice, produce, baby formula, pet bowls: boiled or bottled water only - Dishes: wash, then soak 1 minute in 1 tsp unscented bleach per gallon of water, air dry - Hands: soap and safe water, or 60%+ alcohol sanitizer when water is short…

Boil advisories this week: Wichita (~500,000 people), Twinsburg/Macedonia/Northfield in Ohio after a Cleveland Water main break, and the New Union area near Manchester, TN. The notice says boil your water. It says little about everything else water touches.

Your water utility runs on controllers that are sometimes reachable from the internet. What's the one piece of infrastructure you depend on that you've never seen a backup plan for?

Security in a long outage is mostly discipline. Five things that matter more than hardware: 1. Don't advertise. Generator noise, lit windows, and talk about your supplies draw attention. Quiet battery power, curtains drawn. 2. Cheap perimeter lighting: solar motion lights need no grid. 3. Know you…

Since July 27, water utilities in at least 7 states have reported incidents to the FBI. In Georgia, hackers shut down a pump station, pressure dropped, and residents got a boil advisory. The campaign targets internet-exposed controllers. Infrastructure security is household security.

After: write a 3-line fix list, cheapest fix first. Do one this week. Repeat in 3 months.

During: log every time you reach for something that doesn't work. Fridge, router, garage door, well pump, stove igniter, phone.

Before: charge everything, fill water containers (well pumps stop too), find your headlamps. If anyone relies on powered medical equipment, plan that first and separately.

Wichita's plant lost power Sept 16 and the backup system failed with it. Backups fail from neglect, not bad luck. A checklist: - Run the generator 20-30 minutes under load once a month - Gas goes stale in 3-6 months without stabilizer. Rotate it. - Generators run 20+ feet from the house, exhaust p…

In early September the DOE issued an emergency 202(c) order (Sept 1-8) letting PJM run every generating unit at max output, permit limits waived. PJM also issued a Maximum Generation Alert for Sept 2. When operators plan for max-gen days, your backup plan isn't optional.

Swap it when it's damp, dirty, or hard to breathe through. Keep a few sealed in each bag. They're cheap, and they're useless if you're hunting for them during a smoke event.

Buy NIOSH-approved with two head straps. Ear-loop versions seal worse. The NIOSH marking should be printed on the mask itself.

Seal check: cup both hands over the mask and exhale hard. Air leaking at the nose or cheeks means it's not sealed. Beards and glasses fogging up are the usual tells.

Wildfire smoke first aid. What actually protects your lungs: - AQI above 150: cut outdoor exertion. Above 200: stay inside. - A sealed N95 filters 95% of fine particles. Cloth masks, bandanas, and surgical masks don't. Facial hair breaks the seal. - Indoors: windows shut, HVAC on recirculate, one …

Oregon has burned about 2.34 million acres this year, passing its 2024 record of 2.08 million. Evacuation gets the headlines. Smoke is the health hazard that reaches everyone else: fine particles (PM2.5) get deep into lungs, hundreds of miles from the fire.

Boil advisory playbook. Wichita went from a 5 a.m. backup power failure to 500,000 people on a boil advisory. What actually works: - Rolling boil for 1 minute (3 minutes above 6,500 ft). Cool it covered. - No stove? 8 drops of plain unscented 6% bleach per gallon, stir, wait 30 minutes. - Cloudy w…

Wichita's main water plant lost power Sept 16 and the backup system failed with it. Pressure dropped for about 45 minutes, and roughly 500,000 people went under a boil advisory. Some grocery stores ran out of bottled water. One failure, no safe tap water for a metro area.

Deadnet exists for that exact stretch — no signal, no way to verify a rumor, just a local reference that doesn't run out or lie to you. $79, works with zero connectivity, built from military and government survival documents.

Shelter in an evacuation isn't just "go to a hotel." Plan tiers before you need one: 1. Pre-identified family/friend location 30+ miles out — outside the likely disaster radius 2. Verified emergency shelter locations (Red Cross app tracks open shelters in real time) 3. Vehicle as fallback shelter …

NIFC's Saturday sitrep (Sept 12) lists active evacuations and road closures across multiple western states right now, with several fires still uncontained. When evacuation orders hit, where you go matters as much as what you bring.

Look up what actually threatens your specific location: NOAA hazard maps, state emergency management sites, local fire history. Generic advice is a starting point, not a plan.

That's the pattern with a lot of regional hazards — they don't match the mental model you built from national news. Wildfire prep assumes flame fronts. Peat fires give you weeks of degraded air quality instead.

Peat fires burn underground, sometimes for months, and can reignite after rain. They're a regional hazard most preparedness plans ignore because they don't look like a wildfire until smoke is already thick. Know your region's actual hazard profile, not the generic list: - Coastal: storm surge, not…

Indonesia's peat fires are surging early this fire season as El Niño drought dries out wetlands that can smolder underground for months. Once peat ignites, it's nearly impossible to fully put out.

Glacial lake outburst floods move fast and don't announce themselves — Nepal's Langtang Lirung collapse gave people minutes, not hours. If you're in flood-prone terrain: - Know your evacuation route uphill, not just out - Never cross moving water above your knees — 6 inches of fast water can knock…
