NIFC's latest: 8.54 million acres burned this year, 146% of the 10-year average, with 50 uncontained large fires. The U.S. spent 49 straight days at Preparedness Level 5 (Jul 18 to Sept 4). Fire closes roads faster than map apps update.

The second wave in a long outage is sanitation. When pressure drops, toilets stop flushing and handwashing slips. Stomach illness follows within days.

What's the most annoying thing you couldn't do during a water outage or boil advisory, the thing you didn't think of until it happened?

Boil advisory rules for everything that isn't drinking: - Teeth, ice, produce, baby formula, pet bowls: boiled or bottled water only - Dishes: wash, then soak 1 minute in 1 tsp unscented bleach per gallon of water, air dry - Hands: soap and safe water, or 60%+ alcohol sanitizer when water is short…

Boil advisories this week: Wichita (~500,000 people), Twinsburg/Macedonia/Northfield in Ohio after a Cleveland Water main break, and the New Union area near Manchester, TN. The notice says boil your water. It says little about everything else water touches.

Your water utility runs on controllers that are sometimes reachable from the internet. What's the one piece of infrastructure you depend on that you've never seen a backup plan for?

Security in a long outage is mostly discipline. Five things that matter more than hardware: 1. Don't advertise. Generator noise, lit windows, and talk about your supplies draw attention. Quiet battery power, curtains drawn. 2. Cheap perimeter lighting: solar motion lights need no grid. 3. Know you…

Since July 27, water utilities in at least 7 states have reported incidents to the FBI. In Georgia, hackers shut down a pump station, pressure dropped, and residents got a boil advisory. The campaign targets internet-exposed controllers. Infrastructure security is household security.

Run a 24-hour outage drill this month. Main breaker off. What breaks is your real plan. Everything else is theory.

Wichita's plant lost power Sept 16 and the backup system failed with it. Backups fail from neglect, not bad luck. A checklist: - Run the generator 20-30 minutes under load once a month - Gas goes stale in 3-6 months without stabilizer. Rotate it. - Generators run 20+ feet from the house, exhaust p…

In early September the DOE issued an emergency 202(c) order (Sept 1-8) letting PJM run every generating unit at max output, permit limits waived. PJM also issued a Maximum Generation Alert for Sept 2. When operators plan for max-gen days, your backup plan isn't optional.

Wildfire smoke first aid. What actually protects your lungs: - AQI above 150: cut outdoor exertion. Above 200: stay inside. - A sealed N95 filters 95% of fine particles. Cloth masks, bandanas, and surgical masks don't. Facial hair breaks the seal. - Indoors: windows shut, HVAC on recirculate, one …

Oregon has burned about 2.34 million acres this year, passing its 2024 record of 2.08 million. Evacuation gets the headlines. Smoke is the health hazard that reaches everyone else: fine particles (PM2.5) get deep into lungs, hundreds of miles from the fire.

Boil advisory playbook. Wichita went from a 5 a.m. backup power failure to 500,000 people on a boil advisory. What actually works: - Rolling boil for 1 minute (3 minutes above 6,500 ft). Cool it covered. - No stove? 8 drops of plain unscented 6% bleach per gallon, stir, wait 30 minutes. - Cloudy w…

Wichita's main water plant lost power Sept 16 and the backup system failed with it. Pressure dropped for about 45 minutes, and roughly 500,000 people went under a boil advisory. Some grocery stores ran out of bottled water. One failure, no safe tap water for a metro area.

The "Normalcy Bias" is well documented in disaster psychology: people underestimate danger and overestimate how much time they have, because acknowledging the emergency is more disruptive than denying it.
