Apparently putting together 500 cases only for the defendant to flee wasn't great for Deters' cash flow. But it would have been worth a lot to win those cases.

In 2019, a woman wrote me saying she was suing a Warren Buffett-owned company; she saw my writing about Buffett. It concerned a Pakistani doctor named Atif Durrani accused of performing unnecessary spinal surgeries and botching many of them. 500 cases were prepared and then he fled the country.

Patrick Industries announced a merger with its main competitor for selling components for recreational vehicles. A lawsuit alleges that it leverages market power.

There are internal messages in the lawsuit that show Patrick deliberately not selling the Seaflo part in favor of its own subsidiary's, so the subsidiary (LaSalle Bristol) could "keep margins as high as possible." prospect.org/2026/10/07/m...
Internal messages obtained in the lawsuit were revelatory. In October 2020, Brian Hess, a vice president of sales with LaSalle Bristol, wrote to Chris Murray, his counterpart at Patrick, about sales to a particular RV manufacturer, Forest River. “What I wanted to talk to you about is SeaFlow [sic] waterless P-traps,” Hess wrote. “My sales team is telling me that you guys are getting aggressive to try and take this business. We presently have all the business through our Uniguard product.” Hess wanted Murray to stop Patrick sales agents from being “overly aggressive,” which would force LaSalle Bristol to drop prices and “sell the product … at a significantly reduced margin.”

Murray, who signed the Seaflo contract, responded cordially. “I completely understand and appreciate where you are coming from, and certainly support the effort to keep overall margins as high as possible.” LaSalle Bristol kept the business. “Tellingly, Murray did not respond by noting that Patrick Industries was contractually obligated to use its best efforts to promote and maximize the sale of the Seaflo Product and barred from promoting or selling a competing product,” the lawsuit notes.

A components maker named Seaflo signed an exclusive agreement for Patrick to sell its plumbing product. But Patrick never bought any of it. Why? Because a Patrick subsidiary was making a competing product. prospect.org/2026/10/07/m...
Five years later, by the end of the contract, however, Patrick had only made a partial order of 10,000 more units. It was a loss for Seaflo of about $2 million, and they went to court over the breach of contract. That’s when they learned through discovery that, even before Seaflo and Patrick had signed the agreement, a Patrick subsidiary named LaSalle Bristol was completing work on the exact same plumbing part.

Even though Patrick sales staff acknowledged in internal emails that Seaflo’s part was superior and even cheaper, they prioritized LaSalle Bristol’s version instead, eventually moving one million of its units. This violated a clause in the agreement that said Patrick would not “represent or promote, design, manufacture or distribute, any lines or products that compete with the [Seaflo] Product.”

Seaflo would eventually allege that Patrick deliberately signed it up to the exclusive distributor agreement to capture their own subsidiary’s competition. “The exclusive agreement that was supposed to launch the Seaflo Product became the instrument of its exclusion,” states the revised lawsuit, which was filed in September. The case is ongoing.

A merger to monopoly of the two biggest component distributors in the RV industry has the town of Elkhart, Indiana—where 80% of all RVs are made—nervous. A lawsuit against one of the merging companies, Patrick, shows what increased market power can look like in this industry: 🧵

Former Pharmaceutical CEO Who Raised the Price of EpiPens by 500% Announces $800k Expenditure To Support Kevin Kiley

SACRAMENTO, CA – As American families struggle with the cost of health care including the cost of medications, the Republican-led Independent Leadership Council announced it is spending $800K in support of Congressman Kevin Kiley. The Independent Leadership Council was co-founded by former Mylan CEO Heather Bresch, who gained notoriety when she raised the price of EpiPens by 500%, from $103.50 to more than $608.61. EpiPens are essential for saving the lives of people with life-threatening allergies, and these patients often need several EpiPens so one is immediately available when an allergic reaction is triggered.

Kevin Kiley himself has also displayed a disregard for families struggling with access to health care and its cost. In Congress, he voted for Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill that strips health care from thousands of his constituents and raises health care premiums by 50% as well as allowing federal tax credits to expire for Covered California plans that small business owners and self-employed workers depend on to afford their premiums. In addition, Kiley opposed giving Medicare the ability to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies to reduce medication costs for seniors.

Really sophisticated look at what the loss of state capacity gets you. prospect.org/2026/10/05/a...
IN TECH TERMS, THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT operates what an engineer would call a “sovereign stack,” the layered infrastructure of measurement, reporting, and verification that lets a state see itself. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) measures employment and wages. The Census Bureau counts people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tracks disease. Each agency is a sensor, and together they make up the instrument panel through which the state and the electorate read the consequences of policy.

What Trump is doing to these agencies is not deregulation, the marketing-savvy term conjured up by the modern right. It is something narrower and stranger. He is switching off the sensors. The law itself is left untouched, but the conditions the law was written to address can no longer be measured. The statute stays on the books, but the capacity to enforce it quietly disappears.
