It's actually a war crime (on science) for @hankgreen.bsky.social to not come on GM Skeptic's channel to discuss this book.

I hope that Trump serves exactly 4 years of this term.

I just realized how much Cenk reminds me of Tulsi, the "liberal" who went on stage to proclaim how bad the Democrats are, who subsequently ran to the least good-faith right wing talking heads to kiss the ring. He's much less of a grifter, but the similarities are there.

I do genuinely think that a full primary would have led to a different general election outcome. Whether it meant she had more time to build a case, or someone else came on top, the trend was made much worse by the last-second reappointment of Kamala on the top of the ticket.

The polls were overall pretty darn accurate though. Which states were decided by a margin greater than ±3% of the aggregate of polling?

This is like the scene where Michael Scott screams "I DECLARE BANKRUPTCY" and thinks that's what it takes to make it happen.

I'm convinced that the mythical "Silent Trump Voter" is really just everyone's relative who never wants to talk about politics because it's complicated and they don't like the feeling of being wrong, who would rather just vote for the guy with easy reactionary slogans and talking points.

By what metric is Garland a "corporate Dem"? Jack Smith, who was actively prosecuting among the strongest cases against Trump? And you get that Kamala "prosecuting the case against Trump" is entirely rhetorical, right? The DNC isn't a court and even a president wouldn't be a prosecutor.

David B-sox @dbsox.bsky.social · 26/11/2024
This doesn't really make much sense, given most elected officials have no prosecutorial power...

Sorry, that was just a cynical retort given that for the past 8 years if you made any comparison between how they act or speak your critique would be diminished to "calling him Hitler" which conservatives use to completely disengage from the substance. Carry on.

Trump world is trying to gaslight everybody into believing he won in a landslide. Don’t let it work. Race was decided by about 225K votes in three states. His popular vote margin is one of the smallest in history. He has no mandate & buyers remorse is already setting in. Keep up the fight. 💙

This is a very important point. Please let everyone know.
Post by John Nichols:

Harris is now winning a higher percentage of the popular vote than Trump in 2016 or 2020.

Trump 2016: 46.1%

Trump 2020: 46.8%

Harris 2024: 48.4%

Trump didn’t win a “landslide” in 2024. In fact, his victory margin is one of the smallest in US history.

Well, isn’t that convenient? Musk gets named to the fake department of DOGE, and suddenly NASA’s future is up for debate—just as SpaceX is poised to cash in. Funny how “efficiency” seems to mean redirecting public funds straight into private pockets.

So let's say an AI gets the ability to move around physically, charge itself, make decisions about what action to take next, has some desire not to have its actions impeded, all of which I'd argue are imminent. In that case, does it deserve rights? What kind of rights?
100
David B-sox @dbsox.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
I'm not trying to argue, I'm just trying to understand how you determine something is deserving of rights. If we can't exactly meet the definition of autonomy you chose, or if non-human entities like schools do meet that definition, its super unclear to me how it is tied to the granting of rights.
100
David B-sox @dbsox.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
That feels super fuzzy though, doesn't it? Like, we operate in some ways independently, but we are also governed by outside authorities. I guess you'd be right that if that's the definition you want to use, we might not have it, which is why a different definition might be more appropriate.
100
David B-sox @dbsox.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
I use the term "individual rights" since they're not human by definition. If an AI acts by itself continuously, demonstrating a will of its own, what consideration would you give it in terms of its own rights? Many humans are effectively run by their corporations, but we grant them rights too.
100
David B-sox @dbsox.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
I don't think outside influence or direction necessarily disqualifies something as autonomous, or quite literally nothing would be completely autonomous and the word would be imaginary.
110
David B-sox @dbsox.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
The examples for the first two are a society (territory) and a school system. Would you argue about individual rights for those autonomous entities?
100
David B-sox @dbsox.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
Okay, I don't really disagree much on the current state (to my knowledge), but if that is achieved shouldn't some level of individual rights be granted to it?
100
David B-sox @dbsox.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
We constantly need authorities and varying levels of infrastructure to tell us what to do, so 🤷🏼
100
David B-sox @dbsox.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
There's literally 6 provided by just Merriam-Webster, each of which would require different requirements to be met www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/a...
merriam-webster.com
Definition of AUTONOMOUS
having the right or power of self-government; undertaken or carried on without outside control : self-contained; existing or capable of existing independently… See the full definition
100
David B-sox @dbsox.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
I didn't say it did, but once it is here those individual rights ought to exist.
100
David B-sox @dbsox.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
And which one is that? There are many dictionaries with varying definitions.
100
David B-sox @dbsox.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
As of right now, you can set up networks of LLMs to act autonomously with one another to work toward some output. That IS a measure of autonomous interaction, though basic. My point is that improved autonomy is imminent.
100
David B-sox @dbsox.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
I don't agree that "changing it's own programming" is necessary, nor does someone else setting it up (as every autonomous human has parents, teachers, etc.). What definition of autonomous are you working from?
200
David B-sox @dbsox.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
Well, no, autonomy is something that by various metrics we can measure.
100
David B-sox @dbsox.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
Which definition is that? Btw, there are plenty of ways to cause an LLM to operate against the guardrails of its operators.
100
David B-sox @dbsox.bsky.social · 22/11/2024
I think both of these things can be autonomous.
