Most maritime museums don’t, which is why I generally make the distinction between a maritime museum and a museum ship. That being said, the Big Toy Effect is real and does work to a certain degree.

Intrepid’s time will come though. She’s big and that’s a plus, but anything below the hangar deck that isn’t on a public tour route needs major work. I am not tied enough into that organization to know where their head is at or what bearing they’re sailing on.

Growler is the better ship there in my opinion and not just because she’s a sub. She has an immensely dedicated group of volunteers that keeps her looking good (and frankly she’s the more unique of the two both by ship class and place in history).

Carriers are always a finicky business because it’s never just the ship. It’s all the aircraft too, and in Intrepid’s case a space shuttle and the Concorde. And then you’ve got Growler and if memory serves me correctly that group used to have USS Edson which is now in Michigan.

You talk to any of these ships today and they’ll tell you their #1 focus is attracting younger audiences. As far as berths go, believe it or not BBNJ’s isn’t great. She’s visible from Philly, sure, but actually getting to her is a hike.

I’d argue there is, overall, a dwindling interest. It might not seem like it because we tend to hang around with people who share our same interests, but younger generations are not visiting these ships like the older ones did.

On another note, I watched Greyhound again for just the second time. First time since joining Kidd and actually reading The Good Shepherd and I have to say reading the book made me enjoy the movie much more than the first time.

This really is just the end result of the museum ship boom in the 80s when the Navy was handing them out like candy. Deferred maintenance, dying crewmembers, and dwindling public interest are finally taking their toll.

That still makes Albacore park a multi-ship museum which I am inherently against at this point in my career. Dolphin has a pressure hull 1 inch thick though so she’s not one I’m worried about. She’ll outlast the others just because of that.

Nine! Californian San Salvador (replica) Scrimshaw Star of India Berkeley Medea USS Dolphin PC 816 Pilot Star of India is definitely the favorite child. Berkeley holds their gift shop and workshop. PC 816 still functions and they do harbor rides with her.
