For years, I rewatched the HBO's JOHN ADAMS in the days before the 4th. But I just can't bear to do it anymore. I picture John and Abigail, looking down sadly at *waves hands* all this. Ever built something amazing and then had to watch it all fall apart? I have. Multiply that grief by a million.

My first Ruby Spider daylily ever! And the first bloom this year on a Zelmira lily tree (which smells like jasmine perfume). These are HUGE lilies--see second pics for scale. #garden #daylily #lily I'm seriously becoming a lily freak.

I read at the home of Hoosier author Meredith Nicholson today. It's the current home of Indiana's largest humanities nonprofit. That shelf of books by Indiana writers includes Dreiser, Tarkington, Gene Stratton Porter, etc. Today meant a lot to me.

I asked BJ if she wanted to read Eric's eulogies since she couldn't go to his funeral, and she said no because it would make her too upset. I haven't felt the same way about my daylilies since Judy and Eric both died. I need to find a way to get past that!

Realized BJ doesn't live in Indiana anymore, so I DMed her to make sure she knew my husband (ex-husband, actually) died a little over a year ago. She knew. 😢 She asked me how my former in-laws are all doing, and I had to tell her that talking to them just makes me too upset right now.

Sure enough, Judy's best friend and Day Lily buddy BJ commented. The woman who helped her buy hundreds of varieties back in the late 80's and early 90's. BJ made a comment on every variety I posted because she has them all too.

I worked with Geoff Peck on his MFA thesis in Pittsburgh in 2008. Now it's 2026 (seriously?) and his first novel is out from Univ of Iowa Press. Time flies so fast.

My Christmas so far: my mom has cdiff, my dad freaked out bc his meat freezer died, I had to move half a cow and a lot of fucking chicken to other freezers, my parents got into a fight, I got some green towels (nothing green in my house) 🤷🏻‍♀️ and I put together this puzzle. I'm teaching an online asynch career class for English majors with 60 students. They're each doing 2 informational interviews with alumni, which scares them a lot. 10 students have gone dark. Emailing every week didn't work. So yesterday, I sent them this absurd picture of my dog. "Come see me."

I've been teaching a novel-writing class at Ball State for 15 years, and this group had some writing CHOPS. Plus they came to class! Turned in their stuff! Talked in class! Looked at me when I was lecturing instead of at their screens! Helped each other! Emailed me when they had to miss class!

This is the last item I brought home from my ex husband's apartment the day after he died. A bin of old towels. It sat in the garage for 6 months, until I set it down in my bedroom for another few months. Now it's in my kitchen. When I finally put it in the basement, that's it. No more Eric.
