Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 08/01/20253: Nyxara, The Shattered Queen – Serrated fangs adorn the bat-like face and her rubbery hide is covered in protruding bone spikes. Wings of black smoke rise from her back and serrated talons are ready to rend flesh. Nyxara absorbs life from damaged foes but she is unable to cross running water. 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 08/01/20252: Valkriss, The Soulrender – Her draconic face is crowned with jagged horns and the swollen mass of a body is filled with pulsating, veined tumors. A spined tail ending in a barbed stinger sway menacingly. Valkriss can control minds but shy away from mirrors which reflect her corruption. 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 08/01/20251: Tzarkun, The Voidbound Reaper – His eyeless visage is covered in writhing tendrils and his scaled rubbery hide constantly immolated. Arms with chitinous pincers hang by his side and skeletal wings adorned with bone spurs sway on his back. Tzarkun’s can spew fire, but his flesh burns in sunlight. 000

Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 22/12/2024That’s great advice, very clear. I know a lot of GMs struggle with consistency when it comes to NPCs that only show up every now and then 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 22/12/2024It’s hard to not be biased, but I did design Adventurous™ specifically for beginner players and GMs. Every mechanic, rule and idea is tailored for novice players. With that said, I’d rec. Shadowdark if I can’t pitch my own game. Char gen is quick and random and the rules are easy to grasp and apply 010
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 22/12/2024That’s 5 tips, but what are your best advice for new and experienced GMs? Drop it below and let’s build a treasure trove of DM wisdom together! 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 22/12/20245/5: Always have a list of random names prepared. When players ask for a character’s name, having a thematic list on hand keeps the game immersive and prevents awkward pauses. This is the surest way to avoid all those “Bobs, Gimlis and Frodos” you blurt out when choking. 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 22/12/20244/5: It’s okay to pause and think while DMing. Just say, ‘Give me a moment.’ Your players won’t mind. They’ll appreciate the care you’re putting into their game. This is a tip I realized way too late in my own GM career. 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 22/12/20243/5: Don’t prep solutions, prep problems. Set the stage, present the challenge, and let your players figure it out. Their creative solutions will be more satisfying than anything pre-planned. 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 22/12/20242/5: Don’t reinvent the wheel — steal, borrow, and adapt. Books, movies, TTRPG modules, use all you’ve got if it sparks inspiration. Your players won’t care where an idea came from, only how you bring it to life. 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 22/12/20241/5: Don’t over-prepare. Start small, a village, a few locations, one dungeon is usually enough. Players will derail your plans anyway, and that’s part of the fun. Build as you go to not waste valuable prep time. 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 22/12/2024New to DMing? Or just looking to sharpen your skills? Here is a thread with 5 quick tips to help you run smoother, more fun games 🧵. Got a great DM tip of your own? Share it in the replies — let’s build a resource for new and experienced DMs alike! #osr #dnd #rpg #ttrpg #dungeonsanddragons 730
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 14/12/2024The great thing about animal traits is that everyone knows how a hyena sounds, a crocodile looks and what rat-like means, animal descriptions are universal, which makes your job of painting a vivid picture of the world so much easier. 010
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 14/12/2024Some more examples. Two animals, one NPC, Location and Item each: -Owl: “The man is a wide-eyed scholar”. “Lanterns shine like watchful eyes”. “The cloak is covered in feathers”. -Boar: “The woman is thick and robust”. “The campsite is filled with dirt and mud”. “The helmet is adorned with tusks”. 010
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 14/12/2024Need a cool twist for that magic sword the PCs just found? Roll lion — think a roaring lion’s head pommel. Roll snake — its blade coils with a serpentine pattern. Simple prompts, unforgettable details. 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 14/12/2024Keep an animal table handy and roll on it when you need inspiration for NPCs, villages, regions, or magic items. Rolled rat for an NPC? Think long nose, big teeth, constant sniffling. Rolled rat for a village? Picture filth, trash, and crumbling huts. Simple prompt, endless sparks. 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 14/12/2024Animals and their traits are a great sources of inspiration when describing things, people and places. This thread contains concrete examples, and useful tips for describing all the things your players encounter, using animals as a foundation 🧵 #ttrpg #rpg #osr #dnd #dungeonsanddragons 460
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 12/12/2024Love the idea of monster weaknesses and information as a currency, great list! Also, very well done with the site in general, I’ve used it so many times, amazing job, keep it up 🙌 010
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 12/12/2024What is your favorite interpretation and feature of the Bard? (any type of game) We are working on a class expansion for our game, Adventurous™, and ofc want some Bluesky brain-trust-input. Please, feel free to be both mechanical and thematic in your replies, all angles are 👌! #rpg #dnd #ttrpg 100
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 11/12/2024That’s an interesting idea! I love mechanics that add pressure in a clear way, to push the adventure forward and keep the players on their toes. And when I think about it, you could probably also use it for procedural dungeon generation in some way 🤔 010
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 11/12/2024Sounds like a great idea. Or, you build encounter tables numbered 1-10 with worse results on lower numbers, and you roll for encounter every turn. So the lower the current die, the more likely a bad encounter is. Then you just need a way to determine when you step it down 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 10/12/2024Yes absolutely, this is very much a first iteration, so a few more minutes of thought iron out any kinks 010
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 10/12/2024Yes exactly. I understand that it might sound a bit confusing, it’s easier to explain it all in a proper blog post, than a few characters 😄. As you can see though, a con of the system is that there can’t be any encounters until at least 3 rolls have been made D10->D8->D6 to arrive at the D4. 110
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 10/12/20245: What do you think? Would this work at your table? #dnd #ttrpg #rpg #osr 020
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 10/12/20244: The pros of this method is that the players have a better chance of predicting an encounter happening, and can take precautions. It’s also fun to roll dice (always a good argument in my book) and it adds tension seeing the die since being stepped down. 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 10/12/20243: Continue checking every interval you’ve decided on (per player move, for every 10 minutes etc.) until you are at the D4, because when this one rolls equal to or below the threat level, an encounter happens. 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 10/12/20242: Encounter Usage Dice follow the same logic, so instead of roll 1D6 and having an encounter on a 1, you start with a D10 and then decide on a threat level for the dungeon, 1-5. You then roll the D10 and have to roll above the threat level, if not, step down the die to a D8. 100
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 10/12/20241: Usage die means rolling a dice to see if something happens, whatever it is happens on a certain number. The die is then stepped down to a smaller size, for example D10->D8->D6->D4. This is done until the smallest die is spent, and that’s when the “real thing” happens. Such as food running out. 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 10/12/2024Here is a thread 🧵 explaining an interesting new way of doing random encounter checks in dungeons (and potentially during wilderness exploration as well). I call it, Encounter Usage Die! 🎲 530

Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 05/12/20243/3 Shadowgrip These gloves can grasp intangible things—shadows, smoke, even starlight. Once held, these substances can be molded briefly before slipping away. The gloves feel increasingly cold and heavy with each use. 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 05/12/20242/3 Survivalist’s Compass This ancient compass points not north, but to the nearest source of fresh water, food, or shelter—whichever is most needed by its holder. However, in places of great danger, the needle spins wildly, refusing to settle 000
Dawnfist Games @dawnfist.com · 05/12/20241/3 Glimmerthief Small lantern that can’t produce its own light but can “borrow” light from other sources, and thus extinguish them. Borrowed light can be stored for up to 1h. Attempts to borrow sunlight cause the lantern to emit a dim, flickering glow and to turn warm to the touch. 000
