I love spotting fingerprints on terracottas, the physical marks of the ancient artisan. A votive terracotta head like this one was mold-made, but the details were added by hand to individualize each piece. Zoom in to see all of the fingerprints on the brow and chin! 🏺 1/ 📸 me
Closeup of a terracotta votive head of a beardless male youth with locks of curly hair. His head is tilted to his right, and his lips are slightly parted, revealing his perfect teeth (almost impossible to see unless you look very closely). The terracotta surface is pitted and stained, and some of the hair has broken off, but it's mostly whole.

A knockout archaeological discovery! 🥊 Rare Roman leather boxing gloves used for sparring, so remarkably preserved that a boxer’s knuckle imprint is still visible in the smaller glove! Excavated in 2017 from the cavalry barracks at Vindolanda, near Hadrian’s Wall 📷 by me #FindsFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows a white mannequin, upper torso only, with raised arms wearing Roman dark-brown leather sparring gloves which fit over the knuckles rather than the entire hand. Both arms are bent at the elbow and raised in a boxing stance, with one fist held high in front of the face and the other lower, in front of the chest. The ancient leather sparring gloves were excavated in 2017 at Vindolanda Roman fort, and are displayed in a glass case at the onsite museum.

Here is the information from the museum signage:

These two unassuming but remarkable objects have been identified as a sparring or practise form of caestus, ancient boxing 'gloves' depicted on mosaics and sculptures for the Roman period. These gloves were cut from a single piece of leather and folded into a 'pouch' configuration tapering to extending leather 'arms' which were slotted into one another forming an oval shape with inner hole into which a hand can still be easily inserted. The pouch of the larger glove is stuffed with shock absorbing grasses and bracken while the smaller glove has an insert of hard coiled leather. Both gloves have a flattened lower edge forming a hard ridge of leather acting as a blade designed to cause damage to an opponent. The gloves were probably owned by a soldier who took part in Roman army fitness, practice and competition activities.

Making daylight saving time permanent is a bad idea
Terrence T. McDonald
October 16, 2026 11:16 am

A measure state lawmakers advanced on Thursday is an example of what I’m calling the Trenton Trifecta.

It’s dumb. It’s bad. And it’s pointless.

We very often get bills that are one of those, but it’s rare for them to qualify for all three.

I’m talking about the bill to make daylight saving time permanent if Congress authorizes states to do so.

Look, I get it. Changing clocks twice a year can be annoying. But there are more annoying chores I have to do far more often; it would not occur to me to seek a change in state law so I can avoid doing them.

Dark afternoons are also a bummer. But we would not gain any sunlight by making daylight saving time permanent, because we cannot command the sun to give us more daylight. Yes, our afternoons would stay brighter longer but our mornings would stay darker later. Winter sunrises would largely…

1,900 year-old Roman birthday invitation! 🎉 🥳 From Claudia Severa to her friend Sulpicia Lepidina, it’s one of the earliest known examples of writing in Latin by a woman! Found at Vindolanda fort, it gives a glimpse of social life on Rome’s northern frontier! 📷 me #RomanFortThursday #Archaeology
My photo shows a Roman wooden writing tablet (Vindolanda tablet no. 291) with a birthday invitation written in ink. The invitation is from Claudia Severa, wife of Aelius Brocchus, to Sulpicia Lepidina, wife of Flavius Cerealis, the commander at Vindolanda fort on the northern frontier of Britannia. The writing tablet is made up of two square, wafer thin, pieces of wood, displayed side by side. Each piece is now somewhat fragmentary, with pieces of wood missing in places. The wood is mid-brown in colour with dark text, and is displayed on a cream mount. The text is written in cursive Latin. Most of the text was written by a scribe, but Claudia adds in her own hand “I shall expect you, sister. Farewell, sister, my dearest soul, as I hope to prosper, and hail” making this one of the earliest known examples of writing in Latin by a woman. Dimensions: Width 22.3 cm × Height 9.6 cm. Dated c. 97 - 103 AD. From Vindolanda Fort, Northumberland. Now in the British Museum collections.

Ski resort industry urges lawmakers to reject daylight saving legislation that would “lock the clock”

The Sunshine Protection Act would have economic and safety impacts for ski areas and mountain towns, ski resorts say

Jason Blevins

Sep 21, 2026

The ski resort industry is urging U.S. senators to reject a plan that would end twice-a-year clock changing with a permanent daylight saving time, arguing the loss of an hour of sunshine on winter mornings could endanger resort workers prepping ski areas and delay opening times.

“Operating safely in alpine environments requires adequate morning sunlight,” reads a Sept. 10 letter sent from five resort trade groups and two resort companies representing 115 ski areas in 10 states to 19 U.S. senators, urging opposition to the Sunshine Protection Act of 2026.

The House passed the bill July 14 in a 308-117 vote, with some of the 36 sponsoring lawmakers — 33 Republicans and three Democrats — citing an October 2025 poll of…

A fascinating little ring from the Punic necropolis on Ibiza. It depicts a bearded man in profile, but his hair and beard are composed of two birds (!), and his collar is a dolphin. 😮 The Punic inscription reads 'Belonging to Abdim'. 🏺 1/ 3rd-2nd c. BCE. #MuseoArqueológicoNacional 📸 me
A gold ring featuring a flat, circular shank that widens at the top to form an oval bezel with an engraving that may have served as a seal. The engraving depicts the profile of a bearded male head. The hair and beard are rendered as the images of two birds, and the neck terminates in a dolphin (looking like the collar of a garment). Beneath the figure, an inscription in Punic letters, displaying cursive traits, records the owner's name. The inscription can be transcribed as "Belonging to Abdim" (or Abdem).

A clock change dilemma pits science vs. politics

Some politicians want permanent daylight saving time, but a chorus of scientists say that's the wrong way to fix the seasonal time change problem.

Doyle Rice & Jeanine Santucci

Updated Oct. 10, 2026, 11:35 a.m. ET

Daylight is already fading, and soon Americans will set back the clocks too. But this year political support is building for doing away with seasonal time changes by switching to permanent daylight saving time.

That would be a mistake, scientists say.

A new report echoes a chorus of scientific research saying that permanent standard time is the best solution for eliminating the dreaded twice-yearly clock change.

You might enjoy daylight saving time for its later sunsets throughout the year. But standard time's earlier sunrises are more in line with our body clocks, leading to better sleep and mood, authors of the report say.

For now, most of the nation is scheduled to set the clocks back Nov. 1, ending…
