I suppose I'd have to try - I'd like to think being interested in / learning about people makes it hard to maintain fascist views.

Here's a preview of the new Vector Field Renderer that will be available in #QGIS 4.4 as a result of the recent crowdfunding for native tools for hydrology. The preview shows how you can visualise a flow direction raster with arrows. #GIS #OpenSource

This could be said of a lot of generated text as well- it's just to fill the void. Pad the silence. The void is fine. Embrace the silence. Less is more. It's the notes you don't play etc.

It's been revealing to me how a lot of people clearly regard an image or graphic as something that fills space rather than conveys meaning. The slop is there because we expect something, not to carry any semantic content. As someone who spends a lot of time making maps this is depressing AF.

What I find frustrating on here is that I'm trying to cover how AI will end closed source software as we know it and people are just reflexively thinking that I'm somehow promoting or endorsing it. This is a massive shift in how a lot of society will interact with software going forward.

I’d suggest the genre of profile journalism has some shortcomings
The cover of Fortune Magazine that calls the convicted fraud Sam Bankman-Fried “the next warren buffet” because of his crypto-scamThe cover of Forbes, where Elizabeth Holmes holds a capsule of blood for a cover story extolling her genius, shortly before she was convicted for fraud and sentenced to a long prison sentence.A glossy photo spread extolling the glamour and taste of Asma al-Assad, weeks before her husband committed multiple war crimes and eventually had to flee to Russia to avoid being hacked apart by an enraged rob.

Every AI/HCI paper I review now just sounds like this.
Research [25] shows that people [26] enjoy the feeling of winning games [3,5,19]. Enjoying things can lead to longer life expectancy [2], higher economic productivity [9,22,33-40,302] and improve mental health [9]. Yet many games still include losing players [67,4]. A recent study showed that less than half of the players in a Chess [1] match win on average [42]. We have developed an LLM-driven co-creative [66], user-led [11], mixed-initiative [80] assistant for Chess [2], through which players can redefine the rules of Chess [3] using generative AI prompting such that they are the winner of Chess [4]. A study (n=3) showed that 100\% of people felt better, healthier and more self-actualised after using our tool, showing that this may be the way forward for games and human culture more broadly in the future.

In Scotland our family talks of 'lies' as the equivalent to your apaja. Interestingly it's the same term we use for the pools / rocks / undercuts where salmon and sea trout rest on their way up the river- a place you should always check. I'm not sure if that's just my family or a general thing tho.

Mine is a newer edition and not yet falling apart. It mostly lives on the bookshelf near the living room window next to the binos.
A copy of the Hamlyn Guide to Birds of Britain and Europe by Bertel Bruun and Arthur Singer. This is the new revised edition from 1978. Beside it on the table is an excellent pair of Ross Steptron 8x30 binoculars
