Mine is a newer edition and not yet falling apart. It mostly lives on the bookshelf near the living room window next to the binos.

For all this talk of false positives, I should point out it's pretty good at finding actual barrows too. 🏺

I got excited and forgot the alt text. Look at it!
A legend from the 1779 map of Hvedstrup. The title text is framed by cornucopia. At the top these hold grain. On the sides flowers and apples and pears. All around agricultural implements: scythes, rakes, shovels, troughs. Below on a wee pediment thing is the map signature.

In the foreground an alder and the branches of a willow are silhouetted against the night sky. In the black bit is the burn, but you cant see it. I can't either, but I can hear it. Behind this is a hill and meadow lit by the moon. Little wisps of dal mist are forming at the foot of the hill.

I keep unsuccessfully trying to photograph this ploughed out barrow. There's not a lot left. Today a smattering of cattle helped by giving it a bit of depth. 🏺
In the foreground a grass field. In the middle distance is a suggestion of a hummock- a ploughed out round barrow, likely Early Bronze Age. It's really hard to see, but a herd of cattle help give it a bit of relief here. In the background on the horizon picked out by a stand of trees is Purhøj, an altogether better preserved barrow.

Eventually the cost of this outweighs the theoretical benefits, and these projects end up confined to specific linguistic and cultural areas because it's too hard for everybody else. As an example from Ariadne- here is a map of records mapped to the Getty AAT term 'hillforts' >>>

The Hoya X1 filter is kinda boring but reminds me of the colour grading in O Brother Where Art Thou. I need to try the X0 which should be a bit more IR sensitive.
A rose bush in the foreground. A byre in the background. The foliage is kinda browny green because the IR is kicking in some reflectance to the red channel

I had a Fuji X-T2 body converted to full spectrum sensitivity. So far having a lot of fun experimenting with filtration and trying to decide what to use for an upcoming project- I really want to punch up the contrast between the little wetlands and the surrounding landscape
A small wetland in a kettlehole. The drainage is borked so it's reverting to being a little pond. The edge is fringed with weeds and there's an island in the middle. The rest of the field is stubble.

Thos is taken with a full-spectrum camera so it is sensitive in the near infrared and longwave ultraviolet. Here I've used a Hoya X1 green filter. This cuts a lot of the not green wavelengths but has a little bump in sensitivity in the NIR.

The same wetland, but a monochrome image with a 760nm longpass filter. The water is black. Everything else is white.

#NorthArrowsReviewed This one is now a table in the Lismore in Glasgow. As a directional indicator I feel it should be differentiated a bit better- maybe segmented or with some linework? 5/10. As a table 3/10. The surface is too small and bumpy.
