I've built and rebuilt this "thing" over the past 2.5 years ~4 times. It's finally taking real shape as a thing that other people will be able to use. A code / entire platform inspection tool - that builds code graphs and supports agents with context via MCP. "What if SonarQube was useful?"

Small hobby project off the side of a hobby project. I'm doing some game preservation/restoration on GTA1. 32/64 bit support, Mac/Linux port, modernized controls and camera. Here's a native Mac port...

Making @astro.build work with C# is so damn cool.

David Whitney @davidwhitney.co.uk · 05/08/2026
Here's a work-in-progress video of C# support for @astro.build Obviously requires a .NET runtime at build-time, but it's install path is just a basic NPM package, that runs a sidecar server containing Roslyn to support all the same hot-reload / static dev stuff that we love Astro for.

Going out of my way to make sure that the integration is as idiomatic as possible.

Server rendering, client side rendering, hooks, ESM imports, but it binds directly to C# and generates TypeScript type definitions for all your server side code transparently. It's really cool. Coming soon!

Hard relate - but I'm optimistic that normal creative people can outlast the ghouls that feast and move onto the next thing each time. Hard to get excited to make things in the mulch machine. Had an espresso depresso moment the other day about this yet still.. from a chat...
I do think that honestly modern technology is magic though. We're enabling more people to connect, to make music, to produce art, to generally be heard than ever. There are weird second order effects of scaling humanity and not all of them will be good, and not all of them will go where we expect. But the things we actually have today were literally things I was dreaming of in the mid-90s, and I don't think we're beyond wrestling that kernel back from the ghouls that have attached themselves to exploitation for the whole of human history. It's important we don't give up. I will forever be an optimist because I never will ever take for granted being around at the same time as all the music and people I adore, even while the world is full of conflict and is objectively uneven. It always has been.

Got into the habit of memorialising my talks with key artwork because, eh, why not be extra. Finally worked out how I wanted to get this one on a shirt. I'll probably have a few of these at confs coming up, and if people like em, I'll get em online to buy at cost price.

If you're at DevSum this week I have an extremely limited set of t-shirts to give away. They were samples that one day I'll get around to putting out properly. In red and black. First come, first served.

OpenTelemetry buries your code under SetTag/AddEvent noise. Sidemark lets telemetry ride along in your comments: write //? and it becomes the Activity call at build time — source untouched, IL identical. C# via Roslyn + MSBuild. github.com/davidwhitney...

Last few weeks of conferences and events have been punishing on the body, but soothing for the soul. Woke up to an email from an incredibly kind attendee who took the time to write to me - this is why I write - to feel less alone in the work. Techorama on Wednesday, come out :)

I really love what OpenTelemetry is, but I really hate how it makes codebases look - caked with instrumentation logic. I'm building out a C# library to make it more ergonomic. I expect it's gonna be like marmite for people. Sidemark - inspired by Wallaby.js' "Live Comments", but for OTel.

monsters
there's a monster in the room with me
and I think it wants to eat the world

I didn't realise it was a monster at first
because it was small, and I liked it
and it made me feel less alone in the world

now sometimes when it eats, I can see its teeth
they're covered with blood, but still
I've spent years thinking it wouldn't eat me

I still tend to the monster
and it's warm, and comforting, familial
but I can see it more clearly

it's big now
and its eyes have darkened
and it's hungry

I've been working on diagramming tools to map large systems. The visualisations are for exploration, and the machine readable variant is to help large scale change. I asked an agent to reverse engineer a spec that works in my ecosystem so it might work in yours. gist.github.com/davidwhitney...

Maybe the next movement we need is something akin to "Reliable Computing". The tools are here to stay, but a standard around "Human Designed" software. Vetted, reviewed, edited, cleaned up. Software that offers high standards of reliability and operability with externalised, executable specs.

In 2011 I came to a conference held in this hall in the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas that convinced me I could probably give the whole tech speaking thing a go. Perhaps it's idle sentimentality to take a photo of an empty convention centre hallway, but it feels important to me.
