The most disturbing thing about the proposed $5000 bribe for votes is not that it's illegal nor that it comes from the Huey Long playbook; I can't imagine DJT has any idea who the Kingfish was. It's that he acts as if 5k is a vast sum of money when in his economy it's worth less and less every day.

What interests me about the debate are less the arguments (since Hollywood is always gonna Hollywood) than how it seems to have activated several overlapping culture clashes: not only right v. left, but also high v. low, and elites v. hoi polloi. For this as much as anything, I want to see the film.

I have a lot of respect for Wilson, and have read her Iliad and Odyssey. I also plan to see the movie, although I haven't done so yet. But with the exception of the final post in her thread, which is hilarious, the rest reads to me like an Easterner's projection of a very cliched LA.
